ABOUT THE CITY Cañon City is proud of its rich heritage and many cultural and artistic venues. Located in the Southcentral portion of Colorado, it is a Home‑Rule Municipality and the county seat of Fremont County. It is a Council‑Administrator form of government with the Administrator reporting directly to the City Council. Founded in 1858 during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Cañon City was originally intended as a commercial center for mining in South Park and the upper Arkansas River. With a population of over 16,700, the city straddles the easterly‑flowing Arkansas River and is a popular tourist destination for whitewater rafting, sightseeing, and rock climbing. ABOUT THE POSITION Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties for the Cañon City Police Department to maintain public order and to assist and protect the lives and property of Canon City residents, business owners, and visitors. RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS U.S. Citizen and 21 years of age at the time of swearing in. High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Cañon City. Certified Colorado Police Officer. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities, and skills may be substituted.
