Conservationist I

California Correctional Health Care Services

The California Conservation Corps (CCC) is conducting a statewide recruitment for the Conservationist I classification. This recruitment will fill current statewide vacancies and anticipated additional positions. By applying to this job control, applicants may be considered for any vacant Conservationist I position statewide.

There are three primary assignment areas within this classification:
  • Fire
  • Grade
  • Residential Advisor
Most current openings are fire-related positions. Please review the attached Duty Statements for details on each assignment type.

Applicants must upload all required documents, including the CCC Location Preference Survey, where candidates will identify and rank the locations they are interested in working, along with additional questions. Applicants may select one or multiple locations and indicate the assignment types they are interested in.

This position is under the direction of the Conservationist Supervisor, Conservationists supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate Corpsmembers ages 18-25 performing conservation-related work projects throughout California. Duties include leading crews in remote and urban settings, promoting safe work habits, maintaining accountability of state property, and responding to emergencies such as floods and fires.

Working Conditions


Will be required to work indoors and outdoors, in inclement weather; will be working in public view. Schedules may vary. Will be required to work some weekends and could be gone on spike or emergencies for up to 21 days. This position is classified as "In Office" and is not eligible for telework.
Physical requirements for this classification are arduous: Requires lifting objects weighing 50 lbs or more, often in combination with pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, grabbing, carrying, kneeling, twisting, reaching at or above shoulder level, and daily active outdoor work. Includes standing and walking for extended periods of time; irregular work surfaces, and ability to hike difficult terrain. May require working extended hours and in remote areas.

California Conservation Corps is excited to take part in the first agency-wide collaborative physical career center. The career center is located in the heart of Downtown Sacramento in the brand new CNRA headquarters building. Services provided include one-on-one career consultations, application/resume review, career guidance, mock interviews, and tips for applying.

Special Requirements
  • Commercial Driver License - Provide evidence that a Commercial Class C license with a Passenger Transport Vehicle special endorsement, or equivalent, has been obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • Pre-employment Drug Test - Pass a urine drug test. In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration regulations (49 CFR, Part 382), persons hired to a class requiring a commercial driver license must take and pass a pre-employment drug test. Please note: Per California Code of Regulations 213.5, applicants who fail the drug test pursuant to section 213.4 (h), will be disqualified from the examination in which they are competing and, except as provided by section 213.5 (e), shall not be eligible to take any State civil service examination for a class for which drug testing is required until one year has elapsed from the date the drug test specimen is given.
  • Background Investigation - Undergo fingerprinting and successfully pass a Criminal Offender Record Information check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which may or may not also include a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
  • Medical Exam - a medical clearance examination is required for this classification.
  • Note if applying for the FIRE Conservationist position - Candidates will be required to pass CalFire Type I Fire Training Program. Position requires successful completion of the CalFire Type I 80-hour Fire training program. This includes a vigorous physical fitness portion of the training.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Fire Conservationist I Positions (only) - Must be able to complete CALFIRE basic fire training after hire. In partnership with a CALFIRE Captain B, this position must be able supervise a Type 1 fire crew on emergency response incidents throughout the state. Perform physically demanding work while assigned to a Type I Fire Crew.

Grade & Residential Advisor Conservationist I Positions - Coaching and/or Mentoring experience; Electrical, or general construction, experience; ability to prioritize deadlines; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; Leadership skills Experience in natural resource management, education, or youth development, Strong communication skills, Ability to work outdoors in various conditions. D emand excellence from others; and lead by example; ability to take immediate action in life-threatening situations.
