Hillman

A Blackhorse Underground Inc Hillman is responsible for assisting others with the installation and assembling of pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains using ductile iron, PVC, RCP, steel, etc.

Job Description – Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

•         Prepare pipe for installation to include beveling, installation of retainers, mastics, etc.

•         Assist crew members such as Pipelayers or others with lifting and setting heavy objects.

•         Safely rig pipe and structures for lifting and placement in ditch.

·         Measure and mark pipe for cutting.

·         Communicate effectively with Pipe Foreman and crew members.

·         Clean and prepare jobsites by gathering and organizing tools or equipment and disposing of trash.

·         Familiar with the safe use of hand tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, drills, rakes, and shovels.

·         May perform functions of a Laborer as required.

Skill Requirements

•      Ability to read and understand technical procedures,

operating and maintenance instructions, safety rules,

and procedure manuals.

·         Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors and fellow employees by interoperating instructions given in verbal, written, diagram, or schedule form.

·         Willingness to always follow safety guidelines.

·         Job requires the following motions: stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, speak, hear, stretch, bend, lift, push, pull, twist, throw, reach, and squat.

·         Vision abilities; including close distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

·         Requires regular lifting of 25 to 50 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.

·         Must have strong reading, writing, and good communication skills.

Additional Requirements        

• Minimum 3 to 6 months of related experience and/or training as a Hillman; including experience rigging for pipe installation and using a pipe saw, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Attendance required according to company attendance policy to ensure that the crew can operate at a normal efficiency level.

• Attitude/Cooperation: Must always maintain a courteous and professional manner with co-workers, customers, public.

• Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes. Overtime work required. Out of town/county/state work may be required.

Work Environment

• Physical ability to operate equipment under temperature extremes and for extended hours of time.

• Must lead a normal shift of 8 – 12 hours.

• May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather.

• May be exposed to vehicular traffic.

• Required riding to and from job sites.

Safety:

• Ability to adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition. Personal Protective Gear Provided, with exception of work boots.

• Hired employees will receive safety training and hence forth must maintain the safety standards outlined within the company safety program at all times.

Preferred Background

• Having both concrete and paving experience preferred, however not required. Must have valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation. Spanish proficiency a plus but NOT a requirement.
