JOB TITLE: School Nurse

REPORTS TO: Building Administrator/Coordinator of Nursing and Wellness

FLSA: Non-Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY


School nurses will be employed to provide basic health care services to district students during the school day, thereby minimizing student absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS


School nurses shall have active licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Missouri and have a current certification in CPR at a minimum.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintain confidentiality and comprehensive health records:
1. Ensure confidentiality about students' health, illness, or accidents
2. Maintain cumulative health records, including state immunization status for each student
3. Keep a daily log of all student clinic visits
4. Complete accident/injury reports as necessary
2. Manage immunization compliance:
1. Review each student's immunization status
2. Send notification of unmet immunization requirements form, when appropriate
3. Obtain up-to-date immunization records or medical/religious/immunization-in-progress forms as needed
3. Provide health services and direct care:
1. Perform mandated screenings (vision and hearing) for referred students and annually in grades K, 1, 3, 5, and 7
2. Perform special care procedures (i.e., catheterization, tube feedings, tracheostomy care, etc.)
3. Provide first aid to ill or injured students
4. Administer medication according to district policy with accurate documentation
5. Conduct student wellness checks during/after times of dysregulation
4. Manage clinic resources and communication:
1. Work with the building financial secretary and/or the Coordinator of Nursing and Wellness to secure supplies and equipment
2. Maintain clinics with supplies, first aid materials, equipment, and necessary resources
3. Notify the appropriate building and transportation staff of student health conditions
4. Inform families and teachers of health concerns
5. Maintain professional qualifications:
1. Participate in and obtain CPR certification biannually through district-provided courses

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

1. Serve as a resource person regarding individual student matters and curriculum support for building personnel.
2. Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal and/or the Coordinator of Nursing and Wellness.
3. Effectively communicate, verbally and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.

MENTAL DEMANDS


Ability to maintain highly confidential information; communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and/or ability to reason and make appropriate decisions. The nurse will also need to keep impeccable records and be detail-oriented. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS


An individual who holds this position must have the ability to concentrate in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously.

This employee will frequently lift over 20 lbs and occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 lbs. The employee will reach, stand, walk, grasp, and use repetitive movements in this role.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


Employment will be on an at-will basis for 9 1 / 2 months, beginning with the first day of the work calendar or at the time of employment for the duration of the school year with prorated personal leave. Each nurse will be provided a work calendar showing specific daily work schedules of the employee. The work calendar may be modified by the Board of Education at any time, as needs dictate.


Seven and 1 / 2 hours for elementary and middle schools and eight hours for high school (including a paid 30-minute lunch period) will constitute a workday for school nurses. A definite daily schedule will be established by the building principal and approved by the Chief Human Resources Officer.


The yearly salary will be disbursed in twenty-four (24) equal payments.


EVALUATION


End of the year performance evaluations will occur annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional support staff personnel.
