Agronomy Intern

Tobacco Road is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Agronomy Intern to join our team for the summer season. This position offers hands‑on experience in the Agronomy and Maintenance department within the golf industry, allowing you to develop skills in turfgrass maintenance, care, management, and operations supervision. Key Responsibilities Turfgrass Management: Perform cultural practices such as aerification, verticutting, topdressing, rolling, and mowing all playing surfaces (greens, tees, fairways, etc.). Chemical & Fertilizer Application: Assist with calibration, safe handling, and application of liquid and granular fertilizers and plant protectants. Irrigation: work alongside irrigation technicians, hand‑water, use soil moisture sensors (TDR meters), and troubleshoot irrigation systems. Course Operations & Planning: Participate in daily course preparation (setting up tees, cutting cups), maintain record‑keeping for maintenance activities and chemical inventory, and attend planning meetings with the Director of Agronomy. Leadership & Projects: Lead small crews on specific daily tasks or special in‑house construction and renovation projects. Qualifications, Education & Experience Pursuing or currently enrolled in a 2‑year or 4‑year turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or related science program. No prior experience necessary. Licenses Valid driver’s license. Physical Stamina Physical work in varying weather conditions, including standing, walking, bending for extended periods, and lifting up to 50lb. Essential Skills Basic knowledge and operational experience with turf equipment (mowers, trimmers, etc.). Familiarity with irrigation systems, including troubleshooting and repair. Understanding of fertilizer and chemical application techniques, safety, and calibration.
