ASSISTANT WARDEN

Overview This is a Management Service position for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS). The role serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority and provides an opportunity to contribute to the department’s mission of promoting safety and innovative restorative justice. Responsibilities Plan, administer, coordinate, and review the security, treatment, and administrative programs of a correctional facility in Maryland. Develop policies and procedures to improve operations in a correctional institution. Review recommendations made by correctional classification personnel to approve or disapprove changes in security operations, job assignments, program participation, and disciplinary action. Coordinate the work release program and develop policies to ensure effectiveness in the release and return of incarcerated individuals. Handle problems and complaints from supervisory and managerial personnel. Administer grievance decisions and employee discipline in accordance with Division of Correction and Department of Personnel rules and regulations. Attend task force meetings and committees to supply or collect information and discuss problems and issues affecting the institution. Ensure the institution complies with all regulations of the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards. Minimum Qualifications Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation. Experience: Two (2) years as a Facility Administrator or four (4) years as a Security Chief. Substitution: Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for one year of required experience, provided a minimum of fifteen credit hours are in criminal justice or a related social science. Substitution: Experience as a Director or Manager of a program within a correctional institution can be substituted for the required experience as a Security Chief on a year‑for‑year basis. Substitution: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or related specialty codes similar to Facility Administrator or Security Chief on a year‑for‑year basis. Substitution: Experience held in positions similar to Facility Administrator or Security Chief in other jurisdictions will be considered on a year‑for‑year basis. Special Requirements The ideal candidate must be fluent in spoken and written English and effectively communicate with diverse populations. Professional working fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Korean or other languages is a plus. Benefits Health, dental, and vision insurance at low cost. Personal Leave: six (6) personnel days annually.
