Elementary School Counselor Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the school principal, the counselor shall be a trained professional that ensures a comprehensive social/emotional wellness program for all children. The counselor will support teachers in creating a safe environment that establishes routines, provides for student engagement, and promotes an environment that respects the dignity of the students. The counselor will consult with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students. The counselor will provide support to other elementary educational programs, and develop and promote good community relations among stakeholders. Base pay on the School Counselor SSP pay scale is $53,680 - BA Step 1 with CDE license
190-day based on annual academic calendar

Elementary School Counselor Position Purpose

The counselor will support teachers in creating a safe environment that establishes routines, provides for student engagement, and promotes an environment that respects the dignity of the students. The counselor will consult with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students. The counselor will provide support to other elementary educational programs, and develop and promote good community relations among stakeholders. Essential Function A successful candidate will demonstrate the following essential duties and responsibilities:
- Create a positive environment and effective management structures to purposefully promote and foster effective student social/emotional development.
- Teach social/emotional skills program to students.
- Participate in and support the Response to Intervention (RTI) / Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process, including: Reviewing student data, supporting intervention planning and progress monitoring, collaborating on problem-solving teams and oversee 504 plans and implementation
- Create a positive environment and effective management structures to purposefully promote and foster effective student achievement. Create a safe environment that establishes routines and provides for student engagement through questioning, speculation, and originality. Promote an environment respecting the dignity of the student. Ensure all processes, procedures and data collection are highly organized and effective with optimal use of time. Motivate, engage and empower all students.
- Design, develop and provide targeted, evidence-based interventions to facilitate student performance within the school environment. Consult with the school-based team to achieve student outcomes. Collaborate with educators from other grades or subject areas to establish links between disciplines. Demonstrate mastery of content. Suggest and demonstrate strategies and techniques that are relevant to students and applicable to the real world. Integrate and align objectives, strategies, activities, materials, resources, assessments and differentiate based on individual student needs. Use data management tools to analyze results and draw inferences from data to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.
- Teach, monitor, and collaborate with educational personnel, community agencies, parent/guardian, and students to increase understanding of the student's needs. Provide continuing education and in-services for educational personnel, parents, and community based service providers.
- Provide quality, accurate, constructive, corrective, specific and timely feedback to students that encourages them to perform at their highest level. Effectively communicate with parents and staff about student's progress and opportunities. Utilize technology and/or other avenues to communicate to stakeholders (website, podcasts, etc.).
- Actively participate in continuing education for professional development to ensure practice consistent with best practice and to meet Colorado Licensure requirements. Use professional literature; evidence based research, and continuing education content to make practice decisions. Use professional Code of Ethics and standards of practice to guide ethical decision-making in practice.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by school administration.
- Maintain clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and school system policy.
- Review services for improvements and make changes as needed to ensure quality of services.
- Master's degree in counseling, social work, or child therapy preferred
- 1-3 years experience preferred, not required
- Training in Second Steps, Leader in Me or willingness to be trained
- Valid Colorado Driver's License.
- Valid CDE Special Services License with Counselor endorsements, or ability to obtain
- DORA endorsement preferred, not required
- Is flexible.
- Has computer/technology skills.
- Has the ability to work with students of diverse abilities and backgrounds.
- Has the ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and co-workers.
- Has the ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Has the ability to perform responsibilities without the necessity of close supervision.
- Has the ability to effectively communicate with the School District community.
- Has the ability to analyze, instruct, negotiate, coordinate, communicate, problem solve and use interpersonal skills.
- Has the ability to compare, compute, synthesize and evaluate.
- Has the ability to meet attendance standards and work the hours necessary to perform the essential functions.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain a generally positive attitude.
- Observe all District policies and procedures.
- Adhere to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies.
- Frequent lifting 5 (five) to 10 (ten) pounds.
- Occasional lifting of up fifty (50) pounds.
- Frequent sitting, bending, walking, and standing.
- Occasional stooping, kneeling, squatting, and reaching.
