Job Title Highway Construction Inspector I Agency 345 Department of Transportation Position Details Supervisory Organization: Chief Engineer, Director of Operations, District 3/ Purcell Job Type: Regular Full time Estimated Appointment End Date: May 30, 2026 Compensation: Level 1 - $47,200.00 Benefits Annual Benefit Allowance up to $20,538.24 for employees and dependents Medical, dental, and vision plans, including HSA or FSA options Retirement savings: Pathfinder Defined Contribution Plan and OPERS Defined Benefit Plan Paid holidays: 11 days per year Annual and sick leave accrual schedules Longevity pay for eligible employees Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Job Description Basic Purpose Oversee construction of highways, roads, and related structures ensuring compliance with contract documents, plans, and specifications. Typical Functions Perform sampling and field testing of materials used during construction projects, ensuring compliance with ODOT testing guidelines. Submit accurate test records and samples to the residency lab. Maintain current records in the Construction Management System. Inspect contractor work to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications. Communicate with stakeholders such as businesses and landowners affected by the project. Maintain required documentation of project progress, including measurements, calculations, and documentation of all work events and conditions. Submit progressive estimates and time and diary reports. Operate agency-issued vehicles and other equipment safely. Conduct safety reviews. Resolve contract disputes and specification interpretation with contractors. Use agency-provided software to document progress and required reports such as Daily Work Reports, Diaries, Material Testing, Estimates. Train new employees. Level Descriptor Basic level where incumbents learn techniques for highway construction inspections, materials sampling and testing. Higher-level inspectors supervise and provide training. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Knowledge of basic construction materials and their uses; occupational safety practices; basic mathematics. Ability to collect, maintain, and record field data; communicate effectively; prepare inspection reports; use computer and office software; work in moderate to considerable physical demands and environmental conditions. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED. Special Requirements Certification in materials sampling and testing from an accredited state or national program within 12 months of hire. Possession of a valid driver's license. Willingness to perform drug test prior to employment. Willingness to perform travel related to the position. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly. Specific vision abilities: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception. Ability to work in a wide variety of environmental conditions. Some positions are safety sensitive.
