HIM Coding-Specialist II (PRN)

POSITION TITLE: 094 - HIM Coding-Specialist IILOCATION: Hospital SettingREPORTS TO: Director of HIMREVISION DATE: 4/25/2026QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required for all positions (may be allowed to sign a GED agreement to obtain within 6 months).REQUIRED: see abovePREFERRED:EXPERIENCE:REQUIRED: anything required must be verified before hirePREFERRED: Previous HIM/coding experience preferred. Computer experience preferred.OTHER REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSURE: CPC/CPC-A or willingness to test within one year.JOB DESCRIPTION:The job description reflects the general details considered necessary to fulfill the essential job functions and shall not be construed as all-inclusive of all work requirements inherent in this position. All employees subject to an annual performance evaluation based on the duties and responsibilities of this position.PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Usual working space is a well-ventilated area. Requires standing, walking, turning, bending, stooping, and lifting. Clear speech to communicate effectively with customers (e.g. patients, families, and other team members). Fine and gross motor skills. Environment may be stressful at times, therefore ability to work under stressful conditions is necessary. Lifting up to 50 lbs may be required, anything over 50 lbs should be a team lift or with the use of a lifting aid.COMPLIANCE AND REGULATORY EXPECTATIONS: All employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the highest standard of integrity, ethical behavior, and regulatory compliance. As a condition of employment, employees must adhere to:OCH Code of ConductOCH Policies and ProceduresScope of Practice within License/Certification.HIPAA and HIPAA Security Confidentiality StandardsWorkplace SafetyMandatory TrainingAnnual Compliance EducationESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Financial/Coding: Codes/charges Hospital and Provider Practice encounter records following accepted coding guidelines, correct coding initiatives, standards of ethical coding and policies and procedures. Hospital based coding to include Inpatient and Outpatient services. Assures appropriate documentation is available for complete and accurate coding. Queries provider or appropriate staff for coding clarification as required and obtain necessary documentation as indicated. Checks for medical necessity for required tests and codes based on documentation in the record. Verifies APC's. May perform coding audits on occasion. Works coding backlog reports as required to keep coding backlog to a minimum.HIPAA / Compliance: Maintains coding certification. Compliant with requirements for continuing education. Safeguards confidentiality. Follows coding guidelines, correct coding initiatives, standards of ethical coding and policies and procedures. Follows HIPAA, compliance, and all organizational policies.Communications: Answers phone promptly with a friendly, professional tone. Communicate with visitors, co-workers and medical staff in a friendly, professional manner. Respectful to all.General Departmental Functions: General knowledge of HIM departmental functions. Attends mandatory and other pertinent in-services as well as educational in-services to maintain credentials & competency. May cover for charge specialist if indicated. Embodies OCH values. Knowledge of Policy Tech, Common Share and ICare.
