Advanced Practice Provider (APP/FNP/ACPNP/PNP-AC/PA) Plastic Surgery

The Department of Plastic & Maxillofacial Surgery is seeking a qualified Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) to work collaboratively with a team of physicians, residents, nurse care coordinators, and other allied health staff to provide all aspects of high‑quality patient care for adult and pediatric plastic surgery patients. The successful applicant will be an APP interested in working full‑time (40 hours/week) M‑F 8a‑4p including outpatient care of patients and clinical and/or procedural care as needed by the practice and delegated by the collaborating surgeon. The APP will work in close partnership with an attending physician whose clinical expertise includes orthognathic surgery, pediatric oral and maxillofacial pathology, and the management of congenital craniofacial deformities at our Main Hospital and Battle Building locations in Charlottesville, VA. Responsibilities include comprehensive patient evaluation, perioperative management, and coordination of multidisciplinary care with otolaryngology, dentistry, neurosurgery, and related specialties. The APP will play a key role in facilitating preoperative preparation, postoperative follow‑up, patient education, and longitudinal care for pediatric and adult patients with complex craniofacial and maxillofacial conditions in the ambulatory setting. In addition, the APP will provide dedicated support to a second attending surgeon specializing in reconstructive surgery at UVA Health Breast Care Center Pantops location. In this capacity, the APP will assist in the management of patients undergoing reconstructive and/or oncologic breast procedures, including clinic evaluations, perioperative care coordination, postoperative management, and procedural assistance as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications 1‑2 years of experience in a surgical specialty, specifically plastic and reconstructive surgery, though new graduates with related experience will be considered. Must be able to support patients across the lifespan including pediatric patient populations Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of healthcare systems, leadership abilities, and prior experience with quality improvement efforts. The APP will work closely with nationally recognized surgeons in craniomaxillofacial and reconstructive surgery and will play an integral role in the growth and development of multidisciplinary clinical programs at UVA Health. Background checks and pre‑employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety‑sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen. I. Clinical Responsibilities Perform comprehensive outpatient evaluations for pediatric and adults with oral and maxillofacial pathology as well as oncologic reconstructive surgeries and related conditions, including detailed histories, physical examinations, assessments, functional evaluations, and medication reconciliation. Diagnose and longitudinally manage chronic and complex conditions requiring multidisciplinary care. Develop, implement, and adjust individualized care plans in collaboration with patients and families, using shared decision‑making and evidence‑based approaches. Prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory studies, and monitor treatment response and adverse effects. Provide preventive care, anticipatory guidance, and symptom‑focused management. Coordinate interdisciplinary care with physicians including otolaryngology, neurosurgery, dentistry, surgical oncology, pain management specialists, behavioral health providers, nurses, and other subspecialists. Educate patients and caregivers on disease mechanisms, symptom management strategies, medication use, and navigating complex care needs. Serve as a consistent point of contact for patients with high care coordination needs, helping reduce fragmentation within a large academic health system. II. Administrative Responsibilities Document all patient encounters accurately, clearly, and in a timely manner in the electronic health record in accordance with UVA Health policies and regulatory standards. Support clinic operations, including patient management, visit scheduling, referral coordination, and longitudinal care. Participate in programmatic data tracking, outcomes monitoring, and quality improvement initiatives related to patient access, care coordination, and clinical outcomes. Assist with prior authorizations, durable medical equipment requests (e.g., orthognathics), therapy referrals, and communication with external providers as needed. Adhere to billing, coding, and compliance requirements for specialty outpatient care. III. Professional Responsibilities Maintain active Virginia licensure, national certification, and appropriate prescriptive authority as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. Engage in ongoing continuing education related to plastic surgery, oncologic reconstruction, craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, and multidisciplinary care of complex patients. Participate in UVA’s Center for Advanced Practice, including APP‑specific onboarding, mentorship, professional development, and career advancement opportunities. Contribute to educational efforts by precepting learners (e.g., APP students, residents, fellows) and sharing expertise in plastic surgery, oncologic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery. Remain current with emerging evidence, consensus guidelines, and best practices related to adult and pediatric plastic surgery disorders. Participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, multidisciplinary conferences, academic presentations, and departmental educational activities. IV. Leadership Responsibilities Serve as a key clinical leader within the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, advocating for patient‑centered, compassionate, and coordinated care in complex cases. Contribute to the development, refinement, and expansion of the department, including clinical workflows, care models, and patient education resources. Mentor and support other team members and participate in onboarding and knowledge‑sharing with program growth. Lead or participate in quality improvement, clinical innovation, or research‑adjacent initiatives aimed at improving access, outcomes, and patient experience for individuals with plastic and maxillofacial surgery needs. Represent the UVA Health Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery in institutional committees, educational activities, or outreach efforts when appropriate. Minimum Requirements Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree. Experience: Department and unit specific. Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50‑100 lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease. Compensation The starting base rate for this role is $124,845.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
