About the Facility – Houston VAMC The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is a hospital affiliated with and operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. It is one of the department's largest hospitals, serving Harris County, Texas and 27 surrounding counties. It is named for Michael E. DeBakey, a renowned surgeon and president of Baylor College of Medicine. The hospital in on a 118-acre campus on Old Spanish Trail and Almeda, just on the edge of the Texas Medical Center. It is accredited by JCAHO, and has 343 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care unit for long-term care.

Responsibilities

• The Emergency Medicine Physician shall provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral of patients who present for care in the ED.
• The Emergency Medicine Physician shall provide professional advice to other VA providers regarding professional management of patients in their fast-track portion of the Emergency Department as well.
• The Emergency Medicine Physician shall cover the range of emergency room care typically provided in an urban civilian practice of similar size.
• It is an estimated 95% direct patient care, 5% estimated administrative responsibility not involved in direct patient care.
• The following list is an example of the types of cases, but is not all-inclusive:
• Major trauma, including fractures of multiple extremities, stab wounds, open wounds of the chest and abdomen, head trauma, suspected spine injuries, lacerations, amputations.
• Major medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, shock.
• Obstetrical emergencies such as deliveries of single or multiple births, acute pregnancy complications, vaginal bleeding.
• Pediatric emergencies, including neonatal resuscitations.
• Acute psychiatric problems, including suicide attempts.
• Lower-acuity complaints including viral illnesses, other infections, minor orthopedic problems, minor trauma, alcohol abuse (i.e. "urgent care" patients).
• Other miscellaneous medical problems both acute and chronic.

Requirements

• Unrestricted license to practice medicine in any other US State or Territory.
• Must be Board Certified in Emergency medicine.
• Must be MD or DO and be capable of treating patients of all ages.
• Must have a current DEA.
• Must have and maintain current certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS by way of an American Heart training program (AHA or Red Cross).
