Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The TS-C is a member of the surgical team who works closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetist, registered nurse in delivery of patient care pre-operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively. The job duties and requirements include mentoring, training and national certification is a requirement. Acts in accordance with the policies, procedures and standards as prescribed by the Governing Board, Hospital Administration and Patient Care Services of Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Position Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION :

• High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Formal course in OR Technology Required. Certification in Surgical Technology required.
• Completion of hospital preceptorship program required.

EXPERIENCE:

• 2 + years' experience as a Surgical Technologist in a surgical setting preferred.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Knowledge and skill of surgical aseptic techniques, procedures and hospital standards required.

CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSES:

• Certification in Surgical Technology (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) is required.
• BLS required prior to first clinical shift (must be issued by the American Heart Association).

• Surgical Services within the hospital. May be stressful dealing with individuals, staff, patients, and family. Potential exposure to radiation/toxic materials. Regularly exposed to Blood Borne materials (Category I) or Chemical Hazards.
• Prolonged, extensive, or considerable walking, and standing. Assists with lifting, transport, and moving patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. 8-12 hour intervals, available for call.

ONGOING COMPETENCIES (JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES):

1. Obtains appropriate supplies and equipment for procedure, charge to the appropriate account. Inform Circulator or Charge Nurse of conflict in equipment or scheduled procedure.
2. Assists in equipment care and maintenance, reports any problems to the Supply Manager to have a work order submitted.
3. Understands and demonstrates in depth knowledge of aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile environment.
4. Confers with Circulator that all patient paperwork, implants, xrays, supplies are accurate for posted case
5. Demonstrates accurate and complete sterile set ups and maintains an organized and sharp- safe set up on mayo stand and back table.
6. Responsible for maintaining required credentialing through appropriate governing boards; i.e., CST. or 15 continuing education hours.
7. Complies with Surgical Services Policy and Procedure manual
8. Demonstrates knowledge of the functions of the Surgical Services equipment and operates this equipment in a safe and appropriate manner
9. Assists Circulator in moving, positioning, and care of patient
10. Anticipates Surgeons needs for patient procedures.
11. Demonstrates proper technique for processing, identifying, and passing off field all specimens obtained by Surgeon.
12. Verbalizes reason for Surgical Count. Demonstrates correct sequence and any actions needed for incorrect counts for various procedures
13. Responsible for reviewing Surgeon Preference card to open case in a cost effective manner and to promptly return supplies not used.
14. Verbalizes appropriate use for Flash Sterilization. Verbalizes process for quality control. Demonstrates appropriate process for wrapped and unwrapped items.
15. Maintains certification for BLS.
16. Follows policies and procedures for the administration of medications on the sterile field
17. Responsible for completing Annual Required Safety Training and Annual Health Screen.
18. Verbalizes Role in Fire and Malignant Hyperthermia
19. Equipment Check Off: As per current equipment checklist
20. Is capable of performing:
    1. Surgical Scrub Skin Prep
    2. Gowning, Open Glove & Closed Glove Technique Sterile Draping

Performs other related duties as required
