Summary This position provides advanced emergency medical care to the sick and/or injured as trained and licensed by the State of Michigan. The desired result of the paramedic's intervention is improved patient outcome. Responsibilities (50%) Acts independently to formulate and initiate a plan of intervention for medical and traumatic emergencies. Invasive medical interventions include: pleural decompression, cricothyrotomy, endotracheal intubation, interosseous access, intravenous access, insertion of esophageal obturator airway, and blood sugar analysis. Non‑invasive monitoring and management techniques include: vital‑sign interpretation, cardiac rhythm analysis, 12‑lead ECG interpretation, cardiac defibrillation/cardioversion, use of an external pacemaker, pulse‑oximetry analysis, and proper delivery of oxygen therapy. (25%) Assesses patients during inter‑hospital transfers. Evaluation and intervention is initiated by the paramedic. Additional medical equipment is often utilized to maintain optimal patient care. Examples of equipment include: neonatal isolette, intra‑aortic balloon pump, and intravenous infusion machines. (25%) Supervises field medical management of ancillary rescue personnel, including any physician not identified with the Midland/Gladwin Medical Control Authority, any Medical Center employee, Michigan State Police, Midland and Gladwin City Police, County Sheriff Department, and all County and adjacent fire departments. Other Duties and Responsibilities Drafts a computer report documenting assessment, intervention, and outcome of all patients receiving care. Generates ongoing public awareness and education programs to ensure that medical center staff, physicians, and the general public perceive this service (EMS) and the Medical Center in a positive manner. Evaluates readiness and safety of emergency equipment and vehicles (cardiac monitor, external pacemaker, pulse‑oximeter, laryngoscope, and any/all equipment required by the State of Michigan). Assesses emergency vehicle safety, including roadworthiness. Cleans, polishes EMS vehicles and stations daily; decontaminates any vehicle/equipment after exposure to contaminated substances. Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows and may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health. Other duties as assigned. Certifications and Licensures ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (required within 1 month of hire or transfer) BLS – Basic Life Support (required within 1 month of hire or transfer) DMV CHECK – DMV Record Check EMT‑P – Paramedic (knowledge of emergency medicine normally acquired through 2 years of emergency education culminating in licensure as an Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic; knowledge of pre‑hospital care normally acquired through 2 years working in a Medical Center or similar setting) NIMS IS 100 – NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System (required within 6 months of hire or transfer) NIMS IS 700 – NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Management System (required within 6 months of hire or transfer) PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (required within 12 months of hire or transfer; new requirement as of July 2016) PHTLS – Pre‑Hospital Trauma Life Support (required beginning July 1, 2023; employees have 1 year to achieve and must maintain this certification) Required Education High School Diploma or GED. Experience, Training and Skills Knowledge of emergency medicine normally acquired through 2 years of emergency education culminating in licensure as a Paramic. Knowledge of pre‑hospital care normally acquired through 2 years of experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting. Hazardous Materials Management. Ability to function independently. Ability to analyze patient condition, synthesize information, and coordinate a precise treatment plan. Negotiation skills with patients and families to assure compliance. Mass casualty triage ability. Knowledge of cardiac rhythm analysis, pharmacology, invasive techniques (pleural decompression, cricothyrotomy, endotracheal intubation, interosseous access, central and peripheral IV, esophageal obturator airway, blood sugar analysis) and non‑invasive techniques (pulse‑oximetry, heart/lung sound analysis, blood pressure analysis). Basic operation of external pacemaker. Knowledge of extrication and special rescue. Geographical orientation to access emergency locations. Training and licensure to meet State of Michigan requirements, MMC fleet insurance requirements, and any other medical center requirements. Direct ancillary personnel (fire rescue, law enforcement, bystanders); immobilize potential fractures and spinal cord injuries. Excellent driving skills for emergency vehicles. Interpersonal skills for consoling and comforting victims and families. Physical and Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or appropriate substitute. Mobility without or with an assistive device; perform all job functions. Vision and hearing necessary, with or without assistive device. Capacity to sit, stand, walk for long periods; frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Follow MidMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing requirements. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake. Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, and feeling; repeated movements may be required. Physical demand level – Very Heavy: occasionally (0‑33% of the day) lift or carry over 100 lbs.; frequently (34‑66%) over 50 lbs.; constantly (67‑100%) over 20 lbs. and/or push/pull arm/leg controls.
