The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for Director of Nursing, Perioperative Services in Miami, Florida. The Director for Nursing, Perioperative Services at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute/Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital, Miami FL is a key leader responsible for oversight of operational aspects of care delivery to patients receiving surgical services. Ensures delivery of high quality, safe and efficient care to patients and their families in accordance with regulatory standards. Maintains emphasis on patient experience and service excellence. Areas of oversight: Hospital-based pre-Op Holding, 10 Operating Rooms, PACU and Central Sterile Processing.
Core Job Functions:
Directs, oversees, and evaluates all nursing personnel and staff.
Coordinates the activities of the department and guides staffing procedures.
Sets objectives and long-term goals for the nursing department.
Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups.
Recommends establishment or revisions of policies and develops organizational structure and standards of performance for legal compliance and high-quality standards.
Controls budgets and monitors expenditures.
Ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensures, certifications, and annual training.
Collaborates with other departments and professionals to streamline operations.
Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals.
Reports to upper management.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution, ACEN and / or CCNE
Certification and Licensing:
Valid State of Florida RN license required
Refer to department description specifics for applicable certification requirements
BLS, ACLS, PALS from the American Heart Association (only)
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required

Department Specific Functions:
Leadership:
Assume 24/7 responsibility and accountability for the clinical operation of the assigned patient care units, services, staff, and facilities
Establish and maintain a nursing-care delivery system consistent with the overall philosophy and goals of the health care system and accrediting standards.
Provide leadership and direction for staff, using sound performance management principles to establish a team-based culture in which employees feel valued, motivated and highly engaged.
Plan and direct short- and long-term departmental activities in accordance with facility goals.
Serve as a resource and role-model to staff, interdisciplinary team members and interdepartmentally; provide counsel on nursing care and professional nursing practices.
Collaborate with others departments to improve performance.
Clinical Practice:
Ensure the effective delivery of skilled, efficient, and compassionate patient care by managing the nursing services of the facility, including: efficient and effective scheduling, patient assessments, implementation of physicians' orders, treatment plans, and procedures; administration and recording of medication; monitoring and evaluating patient-care processes/outcomes for the patient-care units.
Coordinate nursing activities with those of other services or disciplines.
Demonstrate clinical competency in designated areas of operations.
Role-model nursing practices consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Performance Improvement/Quality Management:
Establish and maintain the highest level of service to patients, family members, physicians, visitors, and other areas of the health care system.
Create an environment of patient care that is patient-centered, safe, effective, and equitable.
Contribute to best possible outcomes for patients by implementing best-practice standards and improving processes and systems to achieve high performance, patient safety and excellent patient experience.
Assume responsibility for accessing and utilizing appropriate data in order to monitor unit operations; work diligently to achieve patient- and staff-satisfaction targets.
Support the quality framework, which includes both clinical- and service-quality indicators.
Implement a continuous improvement mind-set by regularly reviewing and evaluating care, documentation (EMR and paper), and service provided through a “hands-on and roll-up-your-sleeves approach” to managing, coupled with excellent communication practices.
Maintain constant-state-of-readiness to achieve successful accreditation and regulatory agency visit.
Develops Plan of Correction for cited accreditation and regulatory agency finding(s), and complies with timely submission.
Infection Prevention and Control:
Perform regular infection control rounds with the BPEI Director of Infection Control to ensure compliance with standard Infection Control practices
Review surveillance findings with the Director of Infection Control prior to reporting statistics and findings at formal committee and staff meetings.
Perform environmental rounds, review and analyze surveillance data, and plan/provide education to the staff.
Human Resources/Professional Development:
Identify and recruit outstanding staff; provide guidance, encouragement, and direction to staff, using sound performance management system practices, to include: peer interview process, orientation and training; regular feedback, coaching and mentoring, utilize established, objective criteria related to transfers/promotions that impact status and salaries; employee performance appraisals; disciplinary actions and grievances, when necessary.
Manage employees consistent with state and federal labor laws and hospital policies and goals.
Promote and facilitate professional development of nursing and technical staff through implementation of unit-specific competencies; provide learning opportunities to enhance capabilities and clinical growth.
Communicate in a clear manner to enhance team effectiveness, mitigate conflicts, and engage colleagues.
Conduct regular staff meetings promoting multi-direction information flow and participative problem-solving.
Fiscal Accountability:
Plan, forecast, and manage the department budget.
Perform variance analyses, as required, by interpreting financial performance and identifying key drivers (e.g., FTE utilization, turnover, etc.)
Identify capital-budget needs in collaboration with physician and nursing colleagues.
Plan and implement staff scheduling to meet patient care needs, position control and attendance procedures.
Required Experience and Competencies:
Experience interfacing with medical, executive leadership and staff in a hospital/ambulatory surgery center setting
Knowledge of change management, “lean” process, and quality-improvement principles; ability to initiate and implement change conducive to the improvement of the quality and safety of patient-care delivery.
Experience resolving issues through innovative problem solving and solution development is required.
Possesses a continuous-improvement mind-set.
Excellent leadership skills to manage a large department through well-established performance management skills.
Proven success developing a work culture based on high-performance, patient-centeredness and service excellence expectations.
Must be well-organized and disciplined, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
Ability to set priorities given competing demands; able to adjust allocation of resources, as required.
Knowledge and expertise in electronic health record implementation, workflow review and training requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers and team members
Minimum Qualifications:
Current Florida Registered Nurse (RN) License and Healthcare Provider certifications required, BLS, ACLS, PALS required from the American Heart Association.
A master’s degree in nursing, healthcare administration, or other related fields is preferred. BSN with extensive management experience may be considered.
Five years recent experience as a clinical director and/or manager at an acute care hospital, clinic or ambulatory surgery center.
An appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.
National certification appropriate to the area of specialty.
General experience in academic, multi-specialty institutions, with some knowledge of ophthalmology, is highly desirable.
Proficient in Word and PowerPoint and familiarity with Excel
