Special Education Co-Teacher

The position of a Special Education Co-Teacher will be available at East Central ISD for the 2026-2027 school year. All individuals (district employees included) who are interested in this position must apply online through Frontline via the district website. The deadline for submitting an application is 4:00 pm., June 18, 2026, or until the position is filled.

POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE : Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to address their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth as outlined in the Individual Education Program (IEP). Instruct students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Assist and support building principals to ensure on-site administration and execution of the district's educational programs, policies, and regulations and quality instruction for all students in a safe and healthy environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD committee process for each student assigned.
  2. Implement an instructional, functional, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  3. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan for instructional activities. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect the understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  4. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curriculum as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
  5. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
  6. Participate in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional media.
  7. Utilize assessment data and other data sources to develop present levels & inform instructional activities.
  8. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.

  10. Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer (s).
  11. Use technology in the teaching/learning process.
  12. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  13. Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, toileting and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
  14. Provide direct support to students in a classroom by delivering instruction to ensure learning through a variety of co-teaching models and strategies.
  15. Consult district and outside resource people regarding the education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  16. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  17. Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
  18. Consult with classroom teachers regarding the management of student behavior according to IEP.
  19. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  20. Design classroom activities and lessons for specially designed instruction.
  21. Work collaboratively with the General Education Co-Teacher, the grade-level team, and other staff to plan, share student work, and ensure that instruction is aligned with identified curriculum and standards.
  22. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  23. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  24. Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
  25. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  26. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  27. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  28. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  29. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  30. Perform other duties as assigned.
  31. Maintain confidentiality consistent with federal, state and local requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certificate:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate - Generalist or Core Subjects EC-6, Special Education EC-12, and ESL 1-8 Preferred
[Physical Education Teachers: Current automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate]
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal-setting process and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Effective communication skills


EQUIPMENT USED: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment


WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint, and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
