Full-Time Mechanic

Hourly Wage: $25-$35/hour

Distinguishing Features of the Class: This is skilled work involving responsibility for the complete maintenance and repair of a wide variety of equipment including automotive vehicles and heavy-duty construction equipment with internal combustion engines. The work requires a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities: Troubleshoots vehicles to determine repairs or adjustments needed; Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems of internal combustion motor equipment, including light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty construction vehicles and equipment; Performs diagnostics with the use of electronic diagnostic equipment; Performs New York State safety and emissions inspections, timed interval preventive maintenance and other related services; Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment; Attaches and removes snowplow blades and other auxiliary equipment; May repair and service automotive air conditioning systems as required; May operate school buses and motorized construction vehicles; May perform routine labor and semi-skilled buildings and grounds maintenance as assigned.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trades; through knowledge of standard school bus repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trades when appointed at school districts; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy internal combustion engines for automotive and other mechanical equipment; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to school buses and other mechanical equipment when appointed at school districts; familiarity with welding techniques; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; good physical condition.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either:

D. Successful completion of a two-year post-secondary program for heavy diesel engine equipment technician; ORE. Successful completion of a two-year program for Automotive Technology and one (1) year of experience as a skilled heavy equipment automotive mechanic, which shall have involved repair and maintenance of heavy-duty gasoline or diesel engine automotive equipment used in construction, farming or commercial fleet operations. Note: Experience must be at the skilled mechanic level. Performing minor repairs and maintenance incidental to operating heavy automotive equipment is not considered qualifying experience; ORF. Two (2) years of experience as listed in B. above.

2. When Assigned to Cities, Towns, Schools, or Villages - Possession, at time of appointment and during service in this classification, of a valid NYS Motor Vehicle Operator's license appropriate for the type of vehicles which the employee may from time to time operate.

3. When Assigned to Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities (Highway or Airport)- Possession, at time of appointment, of a New York State Class D Operator's License. Possession of a valid NYS Class B CDL and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner, and during service in this class.

4. When Assigned to Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities (Landfill) - Possession, at time of appointment, of a New York State Class D Operator's License. Possession of a valid NYS Class A CDL and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner, and during service in this class.

5. When Assigned to Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities (CARTS) - Possession, at time of appointment, of a New York State Class D Operator's License. Possession of a valid NYS Class B CDL with "P" endorsement and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner, and during service in this class.

6. When Assigned to Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities - Must have own tools at time of appointment and during service in this class. Must possess NYS certification as a motor vehicle inspector and certification per 42 U.S.C. Section 7671 h for servicing of motor vehicle air conditioners within 12 months of appointment, and during service in this class.
