Position Summary

The Wrestling Coach assists all aspects of the wrestling program, including athlete development, technical instruction, practice planning, meet management, and program administration. This role emphasizes building a culture of physical discipline, sportsmanship, academic accountability, and competitive excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Technical Instruction

• Design and execute progressive practice plans focusing on fundamental techniques, conditioning, mat strategy, and weight management.
• Oversee coaching staff (assistant and volunteer coaches), setting standards and delegating responsibilities.
• Corner athletes during dual meets, tournaments, and postseason competition, providing real-time strategic guidance.

Athlete Safety & Conditioning

• Implement safe, healthy weight management guidelines in compliance with governing athletic associations (e.g., NFHS or NCAA).
• Coordinate with athletic trainers to ensure injury prevention, skin safety checks, and proper recovery protocols.
• Enforce strict hygiene standards in the wrestling room, including regular mat sanitization and equipment maintenance.

Administration & Program Operations

• Schedule dual meets, tournament entries, travel logistics, and weigh-in procedures.
• Manage program budget, equipment ordering, and inventory (singlets, warm-ups, headgear, mats).
• Oversee team media, match results entry, and communication with school administrators, parents, and community members.

Academic & Student Development

• Monitor academic eligibility and classroom performance of student-athletes.
• Foster sportsmanship, respect, character development, and team unity on and off the mat.
• Assist athletes pursuing collegiate wrestling opportunities through recruiting guidance and coach networking.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: 1+ years of wrestling coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level; prior competitive wrestling background preferred.
• Certifications: First Aid/CPR/AED certified; required state or association coaching certifications (e.g., NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching, USA Wrestling certification).
• Knowledge: Deep understanding of Folkstyle wrestling rules, scoring systems, weight monitoring protocols, and safety standards.
• Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills; ability to motivate student-athletes of varying skill levels.
