J.D. McCarty Center is looking for a Charge Nurse to join our team! This person is responsible for supporting the RN, LPN, and Direct Care Specialists in the hospital units with providing nursing care and treatments to developmentally disabled patients, birth-21, with a variety of medical conditions.
The ideal candidate will display compassion, education, proficiency and experience while assisting the patient. This critical role assists in creating and managing nursing care plans and will participate in the evaluation of current and future medical needs of the patient.
Starting salary is $70,000.00 per year and will be based on experience.
Responsibilities:
Provides professional nursing care and services to developmentally disabled patients demonstrating reliability and competency in accordance with the Nursing Practices Act and State Health Department standards to include administration of medications/ treatments and proper documentation. Functions as part of a direct care team to provide supervision, support and/or assistance to RNs, LPNs and Direct Care Specialists.
Coordinates with interdiciplinary team members in admissions, discharges and furloughs of patients in accordance to agency policies and procedures. Participates with interdiciplinary team in the communication and distribution of patient information during team meetings. May attend weekly inpatient staffings. Presents nursing information/behavioral observations. Receives current patient status from inter-departmental reports and delivers information/reports to other nursing staff. Upon arrival receives report from Charge Nurse or designated licensed staff member concerning events occurring during shift to include but not limited to: any changes in patient status medically, behaviorally, therapeutically, update of new physician orders, status of the orders, etc. Contact the Lead DCS to ensure appropriate staffing is in place for patient care based on established acuity system to include bringing in the on-call DCS staff when necessary. Provides supervision, oversight, and support to RNs, LPNs, and Direct Care staff concerning patient needs and care. Responsible for signing off on all LPN assessments. Coordinates with HU Nurse to ensure DCS interventions are in accordance with the established nursing plan of care and agency policy and procedures. Reports any employee related problems to the Director of Nursing or Nurse Manager in order to maintain order/discipline and provide safe nursing care. When available, work with Lead DCS to provide breaks and mealtimes for Direct Care staff. Will be available for breaks and/or mealtimes for Nursing staff. Provides ongoing education and training in relation to day-to-day aspects of patient care. Provide training in the following procedures/processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy: procedures in emergent situation, labs, entering orders, reading over behavior plans, training on behavior plans to understand the execution required for DCS, time management, planner, staffing notes, EHR changes (Menstrual cycle tracking and furlough changes), discharges, furloughs, inventory, entering FSBS, vital signs, weight, height, etc. into the chart. When notified by HU Nurse, supports staff who are responsible to provide patient intervention when critical and/or emergency situations occurs. Assist the licensed nurse in completing appropriate actions i.e. first aid, phone doctor, notify DON, take vitals, etc., and accurately documents all care/interventions in the EHR. Ensures safety and quality patient care is delivered in accordance with established care plans. In regards to patient restraint/seclusion issues or concerns, will assist the nurse in assessing and determining if either is necessary based on patient's nursing care plans and agency's policies and procedures to include obtaining physician's orders per policy, document all interventions in the EHR, perform on-going assessment for the duration of the restraint/seclusion and ensure all aspects of the restraint/seclusion are performed in accordance with the agency's policy and procedure. Responsible for reviewing patient EHR record to ensure appropriate content is noted. Encourage license staff to practice documenting patient specific data from daily physical assessment to include behaviors, medical concerns, physician communications, treatment team communication, injuries, intake and output, etc. into the EHR utilizing PIE format for each patient assigned and minimize the use of within normal limits. Coordinates with HU Nurses to ensure follow through for patient needs or concerns. Trains the HU Nurse to use tracking form and verbal confirmation of patient needs/concerns that have been addressed or that are pending. Ensures report is thorough to include if any additional action needs to be taken by the oncoming nurse. Promotes passing this need/concern on until resolved to ensure patient's needs/concerns are met and resolved. Responsible for reviewing documents are complete and equipment has been checked for QA measures. This will include but not limited to: weekly staffing notes, signature on staffing notes, patient documentation, medication/treatment documentation via paper MAR or E-MAR, narcotic counts, documentation of refrigerator temps, writing docotors' orders, ordering medication, notification of patient appointment information, checking emergency cart, AED, etc. Responsible for restocking the medication rooms, supply rooms, and treatment rooms. Organizing the nurses' stations. Prepare dailey report for DON and Nurse Managers and send via e-mail.. When weekly DCS assignments require adjustment due to call-ins, discharges, admissions, etc., works with the Lead DCS on updating the current patient assignment that is based on established acuity system and recommendations noted in behavior plans. Review hospital unit processes and/or procedures on a routine basis. Develop or update supporting documents and/or training to be presented to DON or Nurse Manager for implementation. Present information to Licensed Staff, Lead DCS, and DCS staff and provide training as required. Notifies Appointment Nurse of any doctor's orders that require patient appointment to be made to include follow up appointments. Will send this information via e-mail within 24 hours of notification. Maintains an appointment calendar/log to ensure appointments are made, the appointment is completed, staffing for appointment is assigned, and proper vehicle is reserved when necessary. Identifies training needed for Hospital Unit Staff that pertains to acute care, skills, communication, working scenarios for improvement, customer service, and team building. Participate in the development and implementation of the recommended training. Assist other Hospital staff in the distribution or completion of training to meet hospital training requirements. Assist DON and Nurse Manager in reviewing Nursing Department policies and procedures. Reviews assigned hospital unit policies for recommendations of changes and updates as assigned by DON or Nurse Manager. Attends workshops and inservices to maintain and enhance professional skills as required by regulatory guidelines and as approved by the Director of Nursing. Demonstrates safety awareness during entire shift to include appropriate lifting techniques, awareness of patient and staff surroundings, using appropriate training techniques i.e. Safety Care, CPR, First Aid. Follows agency and department policy guidelines when lifting by using proper body mechanics while performing duties. Complies with department guidelines for lifting up to 25 pounds and obtains assistance for weights over 30 pounds. Follows infection control policy, procedures, and guidelines in reporting infectious illness, utilizing isolation procedures, and in practicing proper universal precautions. Upon notification of the security staff, implement appropriate evacuation procedures, to include gathering patient charts, medication, directing staff and patients, etc. In critical staffing events, will be required to work as a Hospital Unit Nurse. Performs related tasks as assigned. Requirements:- Associates or Bachelor's degree and a license to practice nursing in the state of Oklahoma

- Must be in good standing with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing
About J.D. McCarty Center:
J.D. McCarty Center is a pediatric rehabilitation hospital for children with disabilities birth to 21 years of age. We are a unique 36 bed hospital. Patient are admitted for a 30-day evaluation during which they are assigned a treatment team consisting of nursing unit, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutritional services, social services, psychological services, behavioral analysis, and recreational therapy. Our 80-acre s campus includes a on-site elementary, intermediate, and high school which is staffed by Norman Public School teachers. Patients may continue treatment needs beyond the 30-days as an in-patient in habilitation status based upon progress or placement needs.
