Associate Chemist

Position is expected to perform varied and often complex and difficult procedures somewhat independently. Individual is expected to detect and report problems in standardized procedures due to instrumental, sample, or test system failures. Operates and may maintain, under supervision, test equipment and apparatus of moderate complexity. May provide information for initial data interpretation and test system conformance to expectations. Records, compiles and reduces laboratory data in real time in a complete and thorough manner for individual assignments. May produce reports. A. Job Duties Essential Functions: Ability to stand for long periods of time. Be able to lift a maximum of 40-60 lbs. Be able to work in a freezer (-25oC) for up to 1 hour at a time. Work independently with minimal supervision. Must be able to work with balances, meters, pumps, rotary evaporators, centrifuges, ovens, stir plates, and other standard analytical equipment. Must be able to reach low and high storage areas. Must be able to wash glassware used by the laboratory. Must be able to work with environmental samples like soils, plant parts, animal tissues, and pond water and sediment. Keep organized records. Additional duties as assigned Marginal Functions: Data entry on a computer. Lift up to 100 lbs. Be able to work with respirator. Be able to work more than 8 hours per day, on occasion. Physical Functions: Sitting - 10% Standing - 80% Reaching - 5% Lifting, pushing, pulling, Grasping, pipetting - 25% Walking - 10% Writing - 15% Visual - 100% B. Chemical Safety Must be able to comprehend the potential hazards of the chemicals in use and adhere to the proper safety techniques as dictated by the Safety Manual and/or Management. C. Laboratory Safety Must be able to wear gloves, lab coat, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suit, plastic booties, dust masks, a respirator and a face mask. Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards. Job Specifications B.S. degree in chemistry or related field and 6 months of laboratory experience is preferred. In lieu of a degree, 4-5 years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting.
