Position Overview This position is responsible for the Bureau of Project Implementation upkeep, maintenance, procurement and training of construction surveying equipment. It will also support construction layout, quality assurance of contractor layout, and survey data processing. Essential Functions Provide Computer‑Aided Design & Drafting (CADD) training and support for field staff. Serve as the point of contact with the Bureau of Program Development to transfer design data to applicable data systems for use in construction layout. Maintain inventory and track survey equipment currently in use by the Bureau of Project Implementation. Schedule maintenance/calibration as required for current survey equipment inventory. Perform layout and surveying duties for Resident Engineers when no resident inspectors are available or when contractor layout needs verification. Perform data input and processing, and support construction personnel with complex survey data. Coordinate computer program development and data reporting for the Bureau of Project Implementation. Inventory and track computer hardware and software related to surveying and CADD. Train district construction personnel on the correct use of surveying equipment, including drones. Obtain and maintain all required licenses and certifications to legally operate a drone in Illinois. Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules, state, and federal guidelines. Perform duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre‑engineering, or a job‑related technical/science curriculum plus five years of engineering experience, or seven years of engineering experience. Preferred Qualifications Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance a complex work schedule. Working knowledge of the CMMS system. Understanding of construction documentation requirements. Working knowledge of CADD. Working knowledge of survey equipment. Knowledge of construction layout procedures. Experience training others. Conditions of Employment Requires a valid driver’s license. Requires extensive travel within the district, some outside the district, which could include overnight stays. Requires limited overtime during early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Requires the ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, and deal with animals, insects, rodents, snakes, and poisonous plants. Requires the ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in a variety of conditions and weather (hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy), including but not limited to active construction sites and roadways open to traffic. Requires frequent visits to active construction sites. Requires successful completion of a background screening. Requires filing a Statement of Economic Interest and its supplemental form annually, in accordance with the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act.
