Job Description

This hands-on Welder - Fabricator role focuses on building and assembling structural steel components used in large commercial construction projects. You will read and interpret blueprints, fit and weld steel parts such as beams, columns, embeds, stairs, railings, and platforms, and ensure all work meets established quality and safety standards. The position requires strong MIG, flux-core, and metal-core welding skills, along with the ability to work with modern technology such as iPads in a high-production structural steel fabrication environment.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret shop drawings and weld symbols to determine weld locations, sizes, and sequences for each project.
• Measure and verify dimensions to ensure all parts match the drawings before welding and final assembly.
• Lay out, fit, and assemble structural steel components including beams, columns, embeds, stairs, railings, platforms, and related items.
• Perform MIG, flux-core, and metal-core welding on structural steel in accordance with AWS and internal quality standards.
• Set up welding machines by selecting appropriate wire, gas, and settings based on material thickness, position, and weld requirements.
• Prepare steel by cleaning edges, grinding, squaring parts, and tack welding to ensure proper fit-up prior to final welding.
• Execute welds in the proper sequence to minimize distortion, prevent warping, and produce strong, clean welds.
• Inspect completed welds visually and assist with nondestructive testing requirements such as x-ray or other methods as needed.
• Identify and correct weld issues such as porosity, undercut, gaps, holes, or lack of fusion before parts move to the next operation.
• Perform torch cutting, gouging, and grinding operations accurately and safely as part of the fabrication process.
• Operate overhead cranes safely to move, position, and handle steel components throughout the fabrication area.
• Label completed parts accurately and route them to the next stage of production, such as machining, coating, or shipping.
• Follow work instructions provided by Production Supervisors and Quality Control Inspectors to ensure compliance with job specifications and standards.
• Participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives by maintaining organized work areas, reducing waste, and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
• Perform all tasks in a safe manner in accordance with company policies, procedures, and safety programs, including proper use of PPE and equipment checks.
• Maintain a clean and orderly workstation at the end of each job or shift, including tools, equipment, and work surfaces.
• Collaborate with fitters, machine operators, and inspectors to complete jobs correctly and efficiently the first time.
• Support consistent production output by working scheduled hours, including required overtime, as workload demands.

Essential Skills

• Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and shop drawings, including weld symbols and dimensions.
• Proficiency in MIG welding on steel, including flux-core and metal-core processes.
• Capability to weld and fabricate structural steel components to code and internal standards.
• Ability to perform a MIG steel weld test per AWS code requirements using flux-core, hard wire, and metal-core processes.
• Skill in layout, tack welding, torch cutting, grinding, and basic fitting operations.
• Ability to accurately torch cut and gouge steel components as required by the job.
• Experience operating overhead cranes safely for lifting and positioning structural steel.
• Comfort using iPads or similar devices to access and read blueprints and work instructions.
• Strong understanding of what constitutes a quality weld and the ability to identify defects such as porosity, undercut, and lack of fusion.
• Attention to detail in measuring, fitting, and verifying parts prior to welding.
• Commitment to working overtime as needed based on production workload.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions from Production Supervisors and Quality Control Inspectors.
• Consistent adherence to safety policies, use of PPE, and safe operation of welding and cutting equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a structural steel fabrication environment.
• Familiarity with AISC and AWS standards in structural steel fabrication and welding.
• Experience using automated or CNC-supported fabrication equipment in a shop setting.
• Experience in saw operation or machine operation related to steel fabrication.
• Demonstrated participation in Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives.
• Strong pride in workmanship and attention to documentation and traceability requirements.
• Ability to work effectively on a second-shift schedule, Monday through Thursday.

Work Environment

Work takes place entirely on site in a large structural steel fabrication facility of approximately 80,000 square feet located on an 18-acre campus. The shop uses modern technology including automated CNC equipment, 3D modeling, barcode tracking, overhead cranes, and contemporary welding and fit-up stations. An on-staff Certified Welding Inspector supports adherence to AISC and AWS standards and robust safety and quality programs. This is a second-shift position with a schedule of Monday through Thursday, 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., with guaranteed 50 hours per week and at least 10 hours of overtime. The environment is hands-on and production-focused, with all work performed in the fabrication facility rather than in the field or remotely. The culture is family-based and close-knit, with regular company events such as seasonal gatherings and group activities, including a yearly football season kickoff event with food and drinks. Personal protective equipment is required, and employees are expected to follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area. Uniforms are provided at a low cost to support a consistent and professional appearance on the shop floor.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Daytona Beach, FL.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $23.00/hr.
