Fleet Maintenance Manager

We're looking for an experienced Fleet Maintenance Manager who knows diesel equipment, develops people, and understands that great fleet maintenance is about more than fixing trucks. It's about building skilled technicians, creating accountability, preventing downtime, and ensuring Operations has the equipment they need to serve our customers every day.

Your Role

As a Fleet Maintenance Manager, you'll lead the maintenance operation for an assigned fleet of diesel-powered collection waste & recycling collection vehicles and related equipment. You'll own fleet readiness, preventive maintenance, repair quality, shop staffing, technician development, safety, maintenance costs, and overall shop performance.

Most importantly, you'll lead and develop a team of diesel technicians while building the technical bench strength Coastal needs as we continue to grow.

You'll work closely with Operations, Safety, Career Path, and other teams to keep our fleet safe, reliable, compliant, and ready to roll.

What You'll Do

• Lead, coach, and develop diesel technicians while building a strong pipeline of future maintenance talent.
• Own the safety, reliability, and readiness of your assigned fleet.
• Recruit, hire, onboard, develop, and retain skilled technicians in partnership with Career Path.
• Assess technician capabilities and create development plans that support progression through Coastal's Diesel Technician career path.
• Plan and prioritize preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and out-of-service equipment to maximize fleet availability.
• Ensure preventive maintenance is completed accurately and on schedule.
• Monitor vehicle downtime, road calls, repeat repairs, and maintenance trends while driving improvements in fleet reliability.
• Partner closely with Operations to understand daily equipment needs, prioritize repairs, and minimize service disruptions.
• Hold the maintenance team accountable for safety, productivity, repair quality, attendance, and performance.
• Champion Coastal's safety culture while maintaining a safe, organized, and professional shop environment.
• Monitor fleet performance metrics including preventive maintenance compliance, availability, downtime, technician productivity, repair quality, and maintenance costs.
• Manage maintenance spending, parts inventory, tires, tools, vendors, and outside repair services.
• Ensure work orders, labor hours, parts usage, inspections, and maintenance records are accurate and complete.
• Ensure compliance with applicable DOT, OSHA, environmental, and company requirements.
• Support new vehicle deployments, fleet replacements, equipment transfers, and other fleet initiatives.
• Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes, technician efficiency, equipment reliability, and overall shop performance.
• Lead through breakdowns and operational challenges while ensuring equipment is returned to service safely and efficiently.

What You'll Bring

• Five (5) or more years of progressive experience in diesel fleet maintenance, heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, or a related field.
• Two (2) or more years of maintenance leadership or supervisory experience.
• Experience leading, coaching, and developing diesel technicians.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, brakes, drivetrains, and preventive maintenance.
• Experience managing fleet maintenance programs, repair priorities, parts inventory, vendors, and maintenance costs.
• Strong safety mindset and understanding of maintenance and regulatory requirements.
• Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work closely with Operations and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Even Better If You Have:

• Experience maintaining refuse, recycling, vocational, or other heavy-duty commercial fleets.
• Experience with front-load, rear-load, roll-off, automated side-load, or similar collection equipment.
• ASE or equivalent diesel/heavy-equipment certifications.
• CDL Class A or B.
• Experience with fleet maintenance management systems.
• Experience developing technician training, apprenticeship, or career progression programs.
• Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Creole skills.
