Shop Mechanic / Equipment Technician

Black Earth Pavement — Waukesha County, WI Full-Time, Year-Round | $40–$50 per hour based on experience

 

About the Role

Black Earth Pavement runs asphalt, sealcoating, concrete, and grading work across southeastern Wisconsin. Our fleet is what makes that happen — pavers, rollers, skid steers, dump trucks, sealcoat rigs, trailers, and support vehicles. When equipment goes down, crews stop. We are looking for a mechanic who understands that and takes ownership of keeping the fleet running.

This is a year-round position. Field season runs hard from spring through late fall. Winter shifts to rebuilds, preventive maintenance, and getting everything ready for the next season — no seasonal layoff.

What You'll Be Doing

• Diagnose and repair diesel and gas engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrains
• Maintain and repair paving equipment — pavers, rollers, skid steers, and milling equipment
• Service the truck fleet — dump trucks, sealcoat trucks, service trucks, and pickups
• Make the call on what we repair in-house and what goes out to a dealer or outside shop
• Manage the outside repair workflow end to end — scheduling, parts, follow-up, and turnaround. This is the most important part of the job during the season, when a truck sitting at a vendor for an extra week costs us production
• Perform DOT annual inspections and keep maintenance records current
• Own fleet administration — registrations, titles, and renewals across trucks, trailers, and equipment
• Track service history and repair expense by unit so we know what every truck and machine costs us to run
• Handle welding and light fabrication for repairs and equipment modifications
• Respond to field breakdowns and get crews back running
• Run the winter rebuild program — teardowns, rebuilds, and preseason readiness
• Manage parts ordering, tool inventory, and shop organization

What We're Looking For

• Five or more years of heavy equipment, diesel, or fleet mechanic experience
• Asphalt or pavement industry experience is a plus
• Strong hydraulic and electrical troubleshooting ability
• Welding experience (MIG / stick)
• Own hand tools — we supply the specialty tools and shop equipment
• Valid driver's license; CDL is a plus, or we will help you get one
• Comfortable dealing with vendors and dealers directly, and holding them to a date
• Someone who works clean, keeps records, and does not need to be chased
• Willingness to work early starts and occasional long days during peak season
