Phlebotomist

Job Description Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practice in a manner that enhances patient and caregiver engagement. Essential Functions Accurately collect patient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment. This position functions as part of a dynamic and engaging team with a workload that ranges from fast‑paced hospital settings and high/low volume clinics. Perform specimen collection using many different techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections. Collect specimens from patients of various acuities, including Outpatient, Emergency Department, and Inpatient – such as newborns, patients in intensive care, and all other areas of the hospital. Adhere to personal protective requirements, including gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks. Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members and demonstrate empathy during every interaction. Participate in growth opportunities such as patient registration, CODE response teams, training and mentoring new staff, specimen processing, special projects, and other laboratory responsibilities as required. Maintain organizational skills, navigate multiple computer systems, work well as a team member, and maintain a clean and safe work environment. Manage stressful situations professionally and be resilient. Take on‑call shifts and participate in holiday rotations as needed. Skills Communication Patient Care Phlebotomy Laboratory Operations Regulatory Requirements Computer Literacy Teamwork Working Independently Qualifications BLS Required High School Diploma or equivalent (Preferred) Six months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or national certification as approved by manager/supervisor (Preferred) Physical Requirements Must be able to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent verbal communication with patient care providers, patients, and visitors during routine and emergency situations. Manual dexterity for manipulating fine equipment and frequent computer use and typing for documentation. Lift and transfer patients and equipment of varying weights, including heavy items. Walk and assist with transporting and ambulating patients and supplies, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment. Stand for extended periods of time. For driving roles: sit, see, read signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
