POSITION TITLE: Occupational Therapist

DEPARTMENT: Rehab Therapy

EMPLOYEE REPORTS TO : Director of Rehabilitation Services/Rehab Supervisor

FLSA STATUS : Non-Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS : Full-time, Tuesday - Saturday 8:30a-5:30p

Job Summary: 

The Occupational Therapist evaluates, provides and administers treatment prescribed for a spectrum of disabilities under a plan of care signed by a physician and, when appropriate, in conjunction with other disciplines. The occupational therapist participates in in-service and quality assurance programs as well as other duties and administrative tasks as directed by supervisors. 

Job Duties: 

• Assess patients' physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities to safely and effectively perform daily living skills (occupations).

• Design an individualized plan of care that outlines specific treatment types, modalities, and frequency based on the patient's deficits, goals, and medical needs.

• Work with the patient, their family, and the interdisciplinary team (physicians, nurses, other therapists) to establish realistic short- and long-term functional goals.

• Implement the treatment plan using appropriate therapeutic techniques and activities to restore function, improve skills, and prevent further disability.

• Continuously monitor the patient's response to treatment and modify the plan of care as needed, seeking consultation from other professionals when necessary.

• Provide therapy to patients with medically complex conditions, which may include those on ventilators, requiring dialysis, or recovering from respiratory failure, stroke, or sepsis.

• Develop and coordinate the patient's discharge plan from therapy services and the LTACH setting.

• Educate the patient and their family/caregivers about the patient's deficits, the recovery process, and strategies to manage daily activities safely.

• Assess the need for, and provide information on, the appropriate selection and use of adaptive equipment and support programs to facilitate a safe transition home or to another facility.

• Accurately and timely document subjective and objective findings, patient progress, and treatment outcomes in the patient's medical record, in compliance with legal and facility standards.

• Supervise and delegate care to Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) and therapy technicians, in accordance with state regulations and practice standards.

• Actively participate in patient care conferences, collaborating with the healthcare team to report on progress and identify any barriers to discharge.

Education, Training and Licenses Required:  

Licensed by the State of California (Business and Professions Code 2570-2570.32). BLS that is AHA compliant required. 

Experience preferred:  

Two years of experience as an Occupational Therapist in one of the following settings: acute hospital, skilled nursing facility and/or outpatient clinic. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:  

Thorough command of accepted Occupational Therapy evaluation and treatment techniques; good documentation, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact effectively with patients of all ages and developmental stages. Strong written and speaking communication skills 

Equipment Knowledge Required:  

The Occupational Therapist will demonstrate competency in theory and practical use of diagnostic evaluation tools to assess activities of daily living, cognitive skills, neuromuscular and visual perceptual abilities to plan appropriate treatment.
