Registered Nurse (RN General, Dialysis, Mental Health)

Registered Nurse Job Duties (in order of importance): These duties are illustrative and may include some or all of the following, or other related tasks as assigned. Provide professional nursing care to students hospitalized in a student health services unit, or to inmates, juvenile offenders, or consumers housed in state-operated facilities or institutions, as well as staff. Observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients in the infirmary or clinic out-patients. Conduct nursing rounds, take and record vital signs, prepare and administer prescribed medications, ordered treatment plans, and immunizations. Monitor restrained patients (e.g., lock-ups, detention, isolation) at regular intervals (e.g., every 15 minutes) and provide immediate medical attention in emergencies, including administering first aid, arranging transportation to hospital emergency rooms, contacting physicians when necessary, and counseling patients regarding medical referrals. If assigned, schedule, assign, and review work of lower-level staff (e.g., RNs, LPNs), with authority to approve or disapprove leave requests or complete performance evaluations, though these tasks are not mandatory. Participate in staff development and education, review care plans written by staff, and train and orient new employees. Alternatively, in a corrections medical center, be responsible for the health care of 20-60 bedridden inmates by making rounds, evaluating care needed and provided, developing care plans, teaching health care principles, administering medications including narcotics, and delivering all direct nursing care as required. Perform specialized procedures such as IV therapy, chemotherapy, wound care, oxygen therapy, dialysis, blood transfusions, intubation and CPR, tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning, and phlebotomy. Organize and oversee the 'code blue' team; direct health care staff such as hospital aides and licensed practical nurses assigned to the area; act as lead worker in charge of one assigned shift in the absence of a higher-level nurse. Assist physicians in conducting diagnostic health evaluations for students. Perform clerical duties including charting and recording all medications, treatments, and relevant medical information; completing required reports such as incident and accident reports; documenting Medicaid information; ordering supplies and equipment; maintaining accurate inventory of all controlled drugs, medications, and equipment. Arrange outpatient clinic appointments, medical examinations by school physicians, and new or refilled prescriptions ordered by physicians through local pharmacies. Carry out administrative tasks, serve as liaison within the organization, conduct or attend meetings, occasionally serve as an instructor, and participate as a member or leader of problem-solving teams or groups. Training and Development Required to Remain in Classification Biennial renewal of registered nurse licensure.
