Bus DriverReports to: Director of TransportationDept./School: TransportationPrimary Purpose:Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. Operate school buses that transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Valid Texas License (Class B with P and S Endorsement)Special Knowledge/Skills:Must be 18 years of ageAbility to pass alcohol and drug testAbility to complete required bus driver safety trainingAbility to follow written and verbal instructionsAbility to communicate effectivelyKnowledge of student discipline procedureAbility to manage student behaviorAbility to operate busExperience:NoneMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Vehicle OperationFollow the assigned route and adhere to established schedules.Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.Check the bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify the supervisor of needed repairs.Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.Keep assigned to the bus clean and fueled.Student ManagementSupervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.SafetyObserve all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.Inspect the bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure the bus can be operated safely before driving.Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform the supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.Install snow chains during inclement weather.Report any hazardous conditions along the route.OtherOperate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office.Work irregular hours as needed.Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification.Document bus mileage, gas, and oil consumption, and the number of passengers transported.Supervisory Responsibilities: None.Equipment Used: School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher.Working Conditions:Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions.
