JOB PURPOSE: Protects citizens’ constitutional rights and prevents crime; enforces laws; apprehends suspects; monitors traffic in a designated area of Kennebec County. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: Be committed to the mission of the County Sheriff. Work as a member of a team in the performance of duties. Be punctual for scheduled work and use time appropriately. Understand and work within Kennebec County Government Policies and Procedures and the policies of the Sheriff’s Office. Work collaboratively with various groups of staff depending on the issue addressed. Accept shared responsibility with other team members to accomplish the goal of each team. Assure quality in work performed to facilitate delivery of quality services. Maintain confidentiality regarding client and County Operations information. KEY EXPECTED RESULTS: Prevent crime by explaining and enforcing applicable federal, state, county, and local laws and ordinances; teaching preventative, protective, and defensive tactics; mediating disputes; patrolling assigned area; responding to notices of disturbances; conducting searches; observing suspicious activities; detaining suspects. Apprehend suspects by responding to complaints and calls for help; observing violations; investigating crimes and making arrests. Conduct criminal investigations by gathering evidence; interviewing victims and witnesses; interrogating suspects. Document observations and actions by radioing information and completing reports. Fulfill court orders by serving summonses, subpoenas, and arrest warrants. Maintain safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic; investigating accidents; reporting unsafe streets and facilities. Minimize personal injury by rescuing and reviving victims; radioing for medical assistance. Ensure backup coverage by assisting other patrol deputies and other law enforcement agencies as needed. Maintain operations by following department policies and procedures; recommending changes. Ensure operation of equipment by practicing and training in its proper use; completing preventative maintenance; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; notifying supervisor of needed repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by studying county and local laws and ordinances; attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; practicing skills; participating in professional societies. Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Support the county’s safety and health policies by attending required safety training programs; reporting all accidents and suspected safety hazards to supervisor. FulfILL job function by participating as an active member in training; participating on county task forces and performing other responsibilities as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, run, lift, push, pull, bend, and use hands to use a car radio, handgun, shotgun, M16 .223 cal. rifle, impact tools, spike mats, handcuffs, mace, Tazer, and radar. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be in top physical shape, able to handle violent suspects, and able to run in pursuit. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Approximately 85 percent of the work time is spent outdoors in all seasons. REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS NEEDED FOR POSITION: High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training Program at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (or waiver) preferred. Two‑year Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice preferred. Knowledge of criminal laws, juvenile laws, liquor laws, and motor vehicle laws. EXPERIENCE: Experience and training in law enforcement within the military.
