Food Safety & Quality Assurance Manager

We are seeking an experienced Food Safety, Quality and Regulatory Manager to oversee quality control and food safety programs at our beef processing plant. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with federal regulations, lead a team in maintaining product integrity from harvest to packaging, and drive initiatives to minimize risks and enhance efficiency. Key Responsibilities Monitor and provide improvements to quality assurance and food safety programs, including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), and compliance with USDA/FSIS regulations. Monitor Animal Welfare programs and provide training to employee providing animal care. Lead and supervise a team of QA technicians and inspectors, providing training on food safety protocols, pathogen testing, and defect identification. Conduct daily inspections, audits, and microbial testing on beef products, equipment, and facilities to prevent contamination and ensure adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Lead root cause investigations for quality issues, such as product defects, recalls, or non-compliance findings, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs). Collaborate with production, sanitation, and maintenance teams to integrate quality controls into processing stages, including slaughter, fabrication, grinding, and packaging. Manage supplier quality assurance, including audits of incoming raw materials (e.g., livestock and packaging) and coordination with veterinarians for animal health inspections. Analyze quality data (e.g., yield reports, defect rates, and lab results) to generate performance metrics, identify trends, and recommend process improvements using tools like Lean or Six Sigma. Oversee compliance with food safety standards, including pathogen reduction programs, allergen controls, and traceability systems for recalls. Handle customer audits, regulatory inspections, and third‑party certifications (e.g., SQF or BRC), ensuring all documentation is accurate and up‑to‑date. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, reduce waste, and promote sustainable practices in beef processing. Respond to and investigate customer complaints or food safety incidents, coordinating with regulatory agencies as needed. Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Microbiology, or a related field (Master's degree or equivalent experience preferred). Experience: 5+ years in quality assurance within the meat processing industry, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Direct experience in beef processing plants is highly preferred. Skills: In-depth knowledge of USDA/FSIS regulations, HACCP, FSMA, and food safety management systems. Proficiency in quality tools and software (e.g., statistical process control software, lab testing equipment). Strong analytical skills for data interpretation, problem-solving, and risk assessment. Leadership experience in training and managing teams in a fast‑paced, regulated environment. Excellent communication skills for interacting with plant staff, regulators, and suppliers. Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including exposure to cold temperatures and standing for extended periods. Certifications: Required or preferred: HACCP Certification, Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI), Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), or similar. SQF Practitioner certification is a plus. Other Requirements: Must pass a background check and be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed for plant operations.
