Chaplain I – Rappahannock General Hospital - PRN Job Summary Under the direction of the Director of Mission or Director of Spiritual Care, the Chaplain I ministers to patients, families, and staff, addressing religious and spiritual needs. As a core member of the multidisciplinary team, the chaplain provides spiritual care and emotional support during illness, crisis, loss, and death, and models the Mission’s core values. Essential Functions Recognize the sacramental needs of the Catholic population. Provide religious and ritual needs for diverse faith groups. Minister to a diverse population in a non‑proselytizing manner and offer basic emotional and spiritual support to patients, visitors, the community, and associates. Employ pastoral skills such as active listening and calm, non‑anxious communication. Offer spiritual support for end‑of‑life situations and crises (Code Blue, death, trauma, etc.). Maintain 24/7 call availability with expectations for holidays/weekends. Education Bachelor’s degree (required), preferably in Religious or Theological Studies. Master’s degree in a related field (preferred). Required Licensing & Certifications Commitment to complete one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) within the first year of employment (required). One (1) unit of CPE completed (preferred). Experience Experience as a chaplain in a healthcare setting (preferred). Completion of lay ministry or participation in the ordination process (required). Documentation of faith community endorsement by an official representative reflecting good standing in the candidate’s faith/spiritual tradition (required). Skills & Abilities Presence during illness or crisis. Pastoral support aligned with patients’ culture, values, and belief system. Active listening and ethical practice. Clinical pastoral care, collaboration, communication, crisis counseling, and intervention. Empathy, flexibility, interpersonal skills, human relations, and interfaith dialogue. Ministering to diverse populations. Organizational, planning, and presentation skills. Public relations, relationship building, religious studies, spiritual care, and spiritual care assessments. Spiritual support, teamwork, theological reflection, verbal and written communication. Training Complete one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) within the first year of employment (required).
