Substitute Licensed Vocational Nurse DEFINITION Under the direction of the school site nurse and supervision of the site administrator or designee, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will assist in the care of students with health needs and perform a variety of clerical duties related to school health programs. The LVN will administer prescription and over-the-counter medications, provide first aid, assist students with toileting and tube feedings, complete documentation, and other duties as assigned. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Responsible for functioning under the LVN standards and scope of practice; provides emergency care in situations such as anaphylactic shock, cardiopulmonary distress, respiratory distress, insulin reactions, hypoglycemic reactions, seizures, and other medical emergencies; performs specialized health care procedures as trained and assigned including but not limited to catheterization, gastronomy tube feedings, ostomy care, tracheostomy care, suctioning, first aid, medication administration, and specialized treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured students; participates in the administration of nursing as described in Emergency Care Plans, Individualized Health Care Plans, Individualized Education Plans, or other written plans of care for students per district policy and procedures; monitors general well-being of children as needed including the measurement of vital signs, the presence of communicable disease, the assessment of illness or injury, and provision of other care as needed; refers information regarding medical conditions to Credentialed School Nurse; performs a variety of record-keeping activities involving charting student progress; sets up and maintains student health, immunization, and emergency medical records; assists Credentialed School Nurse with physical screening and other appraisal evaluations; assists with head lice checks; participates in follow-up of students with vision, hearing, dental needs, scoliosis, or other health issues; provides medical supervision to students being transported on a school bus; pushes wheelchair and assists with walkers; transfers and moves students to and from bus and class; assists students with clothing, possessions, or personal care such as feeding, washing, and toileting; sanitizes and cleans portable toilets and supplies; assists in lifting students from wheelchairs and/or adaptive equipment; participates in field trips; maintains health office, medical supplies, and equipment; assists in providing medically prescribed therapeutic exercise; completes accident and follow-up reports; identifies and eliminates unsafe or unhealthy school and/or work conditions; other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and LVN principles, practices, and techniques, as well as related health and safety precautions; health standards and hazards; record keeping and report preparation techniques; preventive measures regarding exposure to blood and other body fluids, potential contact with bloodborne and communicable diseases and chemicals, including antiseptics and disinfectants; correct English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling; health and medical terminology; district policies, rules, and regulations. Ability to work independently; be flexible and receptive to change; competently respond to first aid needs of injured and ill students and/or staff; enjoy working with and being patient with children and adults; maintain accurate records; prepare reports; follow universal bloodborne pathogens precautions; understand, manage, and relate to students who have behavioral problems, learning and physical disabilities; handle medical emergencies sensitively and appropriately; maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information; interact tactfully with students and parents; understand, be sensitive to, and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities, and sexual orientation of students, teachers, administrators, and staff; operate a variety of common office machines as well as tools, equipment, and materials; perform a variety of clerical work with accuracy and speed; effectively multitask, make decisions, and manage work under established guidelines with minimal direction. Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; proficiency in office related software programs. EXPERIENCE One year of work experience in an LVN position preferred; experience working with children with various disabilities, home health nursing in pediatrics, or pediatric nursing within the hospital setting clinic or physician’s office preferred; experience in carbohydrate counting for diabetic insulin care, catheterization procedures, tube feedings, and other specialized health care services strongly preferred. EDUCATION Completion or graduation from an accredited vocational nurses training program; Associate of Science in Vocational Nursing preferred. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
