P/T Police Officer

Job Summary: This position performs as a Sworn Officer, primarily responsible for City Hall and courtroom security. On occasion, the officer will provide assistance with City events. The position is limited to 29 hours per pay period (weekly). Description The officer’s core responsibilities include ensuring safety and order within City Hall, City Court, and surrounding areas. The officer may also be tasked with general security duties for municipal events. Major Duties Primary assignment to City Hall and City Court with occasional assignments for City events. Perform security checks of assigned areas, including courtrooms, holding areas, and adjacent spaces before openings and court proceedings. Transport inmates while performing court security functions. Assist with securing detainees and respond to emergency situations in or around Lawrenceville City Hall. Maintain security‑screening checkpoints, operating x‑ray machines and metal detectors. Handle arraignment and other court calendars as necessary. Complete reports and written assignments as directed by the supervisor. Work with and back up other officers and agencies as needed. Perform related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications (Knowledge & Skills) Knowledge of federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, town ordinances, and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of traffic accident investigation techniques and procedures. Knowledge of the geography and streets of Lawrenceville. Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures. Skill in using a computer. Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment. Skill in operating radios and communications equipment. Skill in operating radar equipment. Skill in restraining persons without causing physical harm. Skill in oral and written communication. Supplemental Information The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed for compliance with instructions, established procedures, accuracy, and the propriety of the final results. Guidelines include state and federal laws, traffic laws, city ordinances, court rulings, constitutional guidelines, training manuals, and department policies. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. The work consists of related law‑enforcement duties. The varied nature of calls and the potential for emergencies contribute to its complexity. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal, state, and local laws. Successful performance contributes to the detection and deterrence of crime and the protection of life and property. Contacts are typically with co‑workers, city employees, other emergency service providers, court system personnel, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, law‑enforcement officers from other agencies, and the general public. These contacts are for information exchange, providing services, interviewing persons, and resolving problems. Physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, stooping, lifting light or heavy objects, using equipment requiring high dexterity, distinguishing colors, and applying physical force necessary to arrest and restrain persons. Work occurs indoors, in vehicles, and outdoors, with exposure to inclement weather, infectious diseases, and life‑threatening situations. Protective clothing and devices are required. Supervisory and management responsibility: none. Minimum Qualifications Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level associated with high school completion or equivalent. Experience sufficient to understand basic principles relevant to the major duties, typically from an apprenticeship/internship or similar position held for one to two years. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the vehicle or equipment operated. Current certification through the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia. Specific Qualifications Must pass a physical fitness assessment (Police Recruits ONLY). Must have the ability to read and write in English. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of academy graduation. Must possess a High School Diploma and/or GED. Must successfully pass the entry exam as outlined by GA POST (Police Recruits ONLY). Disqualifiers Any felony conviction First‑offender cases with completed disposition reviewed case‑by‑case. Any federal, state, or local circumstance or court order prohibiting legal possession of a firearm. Pending traffic citations or misdemeanor charges. Any traffic tickets not yet paid or disposed of in court may delay processing until final disposition. Any pattern indicating moral turpitude or poor character Examples include gambling addictions, sex‑offense allegations, continuous domestic‑violence allegations. Employment history issues considered case‑by‑case. Deliberate omissions or falsehoods during the hiring process. Any dishonorable discharge from the armed forces (non‑honorable separations reviewed case‑by‑case). Misdemeanor convictions Family violence convictions not considered. Sexual‑offense convictions not considered. Traffic history 18 or more points on the driver’s license in the last 3 years not considered. Suspended or revoked licenses not considered.
