Area Chief of Staff The Area Chief of Staff (ACOS) provides leadership, development, and management of associate veterinarians across Banfield hospitals to ensure quality care and hospital performance. The ACOS is responsible for delivering a culture of quality care through collaboration with the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) and practice managers, ensuring every pet receives consistent care in line with Banfield’s six domains of quality. Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within the team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board permits and manage controlled substance inventory. Owner of doctor engagement and retention; assess risk and develop proactive retention strategies. Provide medical leadership in hospitals, fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment with practice managers. Validate clinical skill sets of doctors, veterinary assistants, and technicians through record reviews, audits, and safety event reviews. Allocate clinical time in balance with hospital productivity and performance goals. Oversee coaching for newly hired veterinarians and ensure skill development. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent. Act as brand ambassador within the local veterinary community and deliver excellent experiences to externs and potential candidates. Support associate doctors in achieving productivity goals via high‑quality medicine and preventive care focus. Manage veterinary operations KPIs and collaborate with practice managers to achieve targets. Accountable for hospital OGSM performance and the delivery of quality medicine outcomes. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench with a succession plan. Ensure compliance with Banfield clinical essentials, regulations, and industry standards via audits and reviews. Maintain hospital operations compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including controlled substance and radiation safety. Resolve identified gaps through timely plans and champion preventive care culture. Address client complaints related to medical standard of care promptly. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests, coordinating with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver highest level of veterinary care in a professional, ethical manner. Special Working Conditions Work requires long computer use; project timelines may demand >40 hours per week. Must possess reading, writing, and speaking English ability, proficiency in problem‑solving, and ambulatory skills to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 lbs. The environment is moderately noisy, with exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication. Some travel to assist other hospitals and vendors is required. Experience, Education and Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Valid veterinary license or eligibility for licensure in all applicable state boards. Three years of small‑animal medicine and surgery practice. Must obtain state‑controlled substance and federal DEA license within 3 months of employment (unless otherwise required).
