CDL Driver/Highway Maintainer

Positions are available in Groton, Haddam, Norwich, Old Saybrook, and Waterford, CT. To qualify for a desired location, you must live within 30 miles of the garage location. Position Requirements Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement. Tanker endorsement must be in place at hire. Valid Medical Examiners Card (MEC). List license number, class, expiration date, and issuing state in the “Licenses and Professional Certifications” section of the application. Bridge Position Requirements (OSHA1910.134) Medically cleared for a respirator. No facial hair. Meet equipment weight requirement. Night work required. Veteran Eligibility Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans with at least two years of commercial motor vehicle experience may qualify for a CDL Skills Test exemption as outlined on the CT DMV website. Job Duties Operate and maintain construction and maintenance machinery for state roadways, bridges, and airports. Maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist on larger equipment. Accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever required; mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30 and stay during storm events. Perform tasks such as haulage, loading, unloading, yard transfer, and working in tight spaces. Produce required forms and documentation for selected candidates. Position Highlights Monday – Friday Full‑time (40hr per week) First shift (7:30AM – 4:00PM) On‑site work environment Purpose of Job Class The class is accountable for performing moderately skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities. Operators may maintain complex mechanical equipment and work as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages for routine repair of mechanical equipment. Examples of Trucks Three (3) to nine (9) ton trucks – dump, platform, or refuse with or without winch Attachments: snow plows, duo dump truck, crash attenuators, trailers and towed equipment (except tilt‑bed trailers), snowplows, hopper type spreaders, bridge utility truck, compressor trucks, aerial bucket trucks, wreckers with winch, tandem/10‑wheel dump truck Equipment Bituminous curbing machines Pothole patcher Tractor mowers with single flail Wood chippers Chain saws Culvert cleaning machines Compressors and compressor tools Concrete mixers & vibrators Hydraulic or engine‑driven tools Test boring Class twenty‑four (24) tractor with attachments Wing plow or other side‑mounted attachments Fork lift Duties Survey monument setting Burning and cutting with acetylene torch Flagger (traffic control) Assist Material Storage Supervisor with material handling Construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, painting Relief ferry mate, drawbridge attendant, rest area attendant Assist supervisors in reporting, radio monitoring, and communication Wildlife hazard control Escort vendors and contractors in secure areas (state‑owned airports) Guard/watchperson duties and emergency response training at state‑owned airports Perform related duties as required Knowledge, Skill and Ability Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair techniques for roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, including processes and materials used in the trades. Skills include interpersonal communication, oral and written communication. Ability to perform routine repairs to complex mechanical equipment, operate listed equipment, follow written and oral instructions, and use computer software. Minimum Qualifications – General Experience One (1) year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in a recognized maintenance trade. Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in one of the maintenance trades. Successful completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services. Preferred Qualifications Experience with snow removal Experience with landscaping Experience with construction Experience driving CDL vehicles Special Requirements Incumbents may be required to possess and retain current licenses, permits, and/or certifications. Must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever required. Character Requirements At state airports, candidates may undergo a background investigation before certification for appointment. Physical Requirements Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintain fitness to perform duties. A physical examination will be required. Working Conditions Exposure to extreme weather, frequent lifting of heavy weights, hazardous road and traffic conditions, exposure to heights on bridges, contact with poison ivy, insects, and allergy irritants, and loud machinery. May require completion of an asbestos removal program. Required use of protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
