Project Engineer

This position supports the Chlor-Alkali Industry’s safety advancement initiatives. The incumbent will provide support for member committees, related publications, projects, or training workshops and will guide task groups as assigned. The incumbent is responsible for the collection, technical analysis, and reporting of all performance indicator data and various other metrics collected under the current and planned Institute strategic plan. The incumbent will have responsibility for monitoring technical service inquiries and developing or coordinating replies based on the established guidance of CI. Over time, the incumbent is expected to have the necessary skills that would allow advancement to a senior technical position.

DUTIES

Issue Team(s) Responsibilities Staff assigned task groups to consensus in developing or updating best practices for the production, distribution, and use of CI’s mission chemicals. Provide technical direction to assigned task groups so that well-founded solutions can be developed and implemented to address industry concerns. Keep task group issues on track using action-oriented minutes and other tools to ensure timely resolution of open issues. Schedule and plan meetings or conference calls with assigned task groups. Consistently report the status of assigned task groups and projects to the respective senior technical staff and President. Assist senior technical staff by leading or facilitating updates and discussions for assigned task groups or project-related items during CI meetings or events both virtually and in person. Project and Emerging Issues Management Maintain knowledge of industry safety and environmental performance and performance trends associated with the collection and compilation of performance indicator data. This includes maintaining and continually enhancing the incident database collection system, documenting how it functions, and instructing members on its use. Maintain awareness of emerging issues. Conducting other data collection, analysis, and reporting as assigned. Assist the senior technical staff in representing the interest of members in the federal rulemaking process. Develop and maintain budgets for projects assuring that project scopes are defined, and costs are held within budgetary limits. Administer the Institute emergency response contractor verification program. Manage mobile apps for CI’s chlorine emergency response mutual aid network. Manage technical service responses. Serve as a liaison for members to ask other members technical questions that are outside of CI’s current materials. Identify internal processes or system improvements, as appropriate. Manage the production of CI Pamphlet 10 which contains chlor-alkali facility data and overall production statistics in North America. Periodically visit member facilities to develop and enhance knowledge of member operations. Strategic Planning Responsibilities Provide input into the organizational positions on matters related to health, environment, safety, transportation, bulk storage, and emergency preparedness issues associated with Chlorine Institute mission chemicals based on analysis of performance indicator data, technical insight, and knowledge of best practices. Establish and implement yearly goals, objectives, and action plans in coordination with the involved task groups and ensure they are consistent with the Chlorine Institute’s Strategic Plan. Contribute to the configuration and content of CI’s communications strategy and methods. Assist in evaluating, planning, and supporting AI tools and workflows aligned with CI’s strategic objectives and technical service needs. Champion existing and new peer group initiatives to enhance membership engagement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

The incumbent will have a minimum Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related field preferably with 0 to 3 years of related experience and an internship or coop experience. Knowledge about the production, distribution, and/or use of Chlorine Institute mission chemicals is desirable but not required. Highly proficient in desktop computing including MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to work with committees and volunteers. Ability to travel domestically and internationally to Chlorine Institute and industry events, as needed to participate and speak on behalf of CI. Willingness to work outside of traditional business hours on occasion and as needed to meet major project deadlines. Self-driven to progress task groups and projects without depending heavily on the management of projects by technical staff. Valid driver’s license.
