2024-23 POSITION: ATHLETIC TRAINER LOCATION: HIGH SCHOOL TO BE DETERMINED REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL, SUPERVISOR OF HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS SALARY: UNIT I SALARY SCALE , 190 DAYS, 7.5 HOURS PER DAY FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE OVERVIEW: To assist coaches in maintaining proper physical condition of all student athletes. - Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association
- Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in exercise science, kinesiology, athletic training, sports medicine, or other related field.
- Anyone practicing athletic training in Maryland must be licensed through the Maryland Board of Physicians
- The Maryland Board of Physicians requires for that certification that the trainer has an Evaluation and Treatment protocol with his/her supervising physician, which must be submitted to and approved by the Board.
- Before an athletic trainer may practice, the trainer must obtain a license and enter into a written Board approved Evaluation and Treatment protocol with a licensed physician.
- Athletic trainers must be able to demonstrate practical knowledge and understanding of NATA's publication the Athletic Training Education Competencies.
- Must be able to pass a thorough criminal background check (CJIS or comparable) to be considered for placement in schools.
- Acceptable background, drug and tuberculosis screenings.
- Ability to understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Ability to problem-solve, work independently and as part of a team, and function without distractions.
- Strong stakeholder (i.e. students, staff, administration, coaches, parents, general public, community agencies, etc.) service skills.
- History of professionalism and strong work ethic.
- Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, push, and pull for extended periods of time.
- Average or better hearing, vision, and depth perception.
- Ability to lift and transport heavy to moderately heavy objects averaging 40-60 lbs.
- Dexterity of hand and fingers to operate sports-related equipment.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model for students, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job either with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- CPR certification
- First Aid certification
- CPR/First Aid Instructor certification
- Serve as the treatment and supervisor of treatment for all athletic injuries and conditions.
- Provide basic information and instructions to staff in the prevention and care of injuries.
- Train, supervise and schedule trainers for athletic events and practices.
- Refer athletic injuries to physicians for diagnosis and/or treatment after parental notification.
- Collect, receive, and file all physician's notes and release forms relative to an athlete's physician.
- Administer appropriate instructions and treatment as directed by the athlete's physician.
- Develop and supervise appropriate rehabilitation programs for athletes.
- Assist and advise the coaching staff regarding injury prevention, conditioning programs, and the selection, care and fitting of protective equipment.
- Determine continued athlete participation in a game or practice in lieu of the coach.
- Organize, inventory, and request supplies for the training room/storage location.
- Attend all home events including practices (precedence will be given to high-injury events). In cases of scheduling conflicts, the school's athletic director and/or the Supervisor of Health, Physical Education and Athletics will provide direction.
- Maintain a clean and organized training room that is well stocked with basic supplies for responding to any medical emergency.
- Report significant injuries to the athletic office and administration.
- Maintain injury reports and records using the proper forms.
- Abstain from coaching or assisting in the coaching of any sport while serving as the athletic trainer.
- Maintain training room hours before, during and after practices as the schedule permits.
- Ensure medical kits remain fully stocked and issued to all athletic teams.
- Ensure all athletes submit the required Emergency Medical Card and health records.
- Attend all home and away, varsity football games.
- Develop Emergency Action Plans
- Train and assist with proper fitting of helmets and equipment.
- Oversee care for all athletes sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury.
- Shall work with coaches in the prevention of athletic injuries to:
- Screen athletes for individual weaknesses;
- Set up individual flexibility, strength and conditioning programs to overcome athletes weaknesses;
- Work with coaches of each sport to set up conditioning and flexibility programs for that sports; and
- Work in cooperation with the coaches and the team physician in the selection of the best available protective athletic equipment; and checking it for safety and proper fit.
- Shall have an injury management program to:
- Evaluate the extent of injury;
- Give first aid and initial care;
- Refer injured athlete to physician when needed;
- Administer treatments and rehabilitation therapy to injured athletes;
- To act as a resource to the coaches for staff development in the areas of athletic training and sports medicine and assist the coaches in determining whether injured athletes should be available for participation.
- Shall cover practices and games as follows:
- Give maximum coverage to the highest incidence of injury sport - football
- Give coverage to other sports as time permits
- During regular duty day and posted training room hours assist coaches of all sports on a consulting basis for training programs, injury prevention, etc.;
- During posted training room hours be accessible to all coaches for the purpose of evaluating student injuries, referrals, and follow-up; and
- Provide and maintain adequate records on all athletic injuries, and treatment which were administered by the trainer; practice;
- Including informing the school nurse of any injuries, especially concussions, sustained in any event or and; give priority to home events with the exception of away football games.
- During sports seasons maintain a posted schedule of training room hours to treat injured athletes from any sport (i.e. 3:20-4:00pm, Monday - Friday, or equivalent)
