Hands-On Veterinary Externship: General Practice

An externship experience at an NVA hospital gives students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Students will work closely with supervising DVMs to gain experience in the following areas: Gather patient histories Perform physical examinations Create treatment plans Diagnose patients Provide dental services Observe or assist in surgical procedures Manage patient medical care Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.
