Graduate DC Reads Program Assistant (Student)

Join the DC Reads team at American University as our Graduate Program Assistant (Programming GA) and help shape meaningful service‑learning experiences across campus and the DC community. Responsibilities Recruit, interview, and train Education Advocates and Team Leaders, organizing orientation sessions and ensuring all materials are current. Plan and coordinate program events—including virtual and in‑person meetings, workshops, speaker sessions, and community partner activities—managing logistics, booking spaces, and arranging snacks and materials. Support curriculum development and leadership training for student leaders, providing guidance and resources to facilitate skill building in equity‑centered education, social justice, and community partnership. Maintain program communications, including Teams channels, newsletters, social media posts, and participant records. Assist the Director with federal Work‑Study operations, program evaluations, tracking of participation hours, and preparation of certificates for End‑of‑Year celebrations. Coordinate with the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement (CLCE) Director to develop student leadership curricula and assess potential community partnerships. Provide ongoing mentorship, guidance, and support to Team Leaders and Education Advocates, meeting individually and in small groups as needed. Facilitate meetings, take minutes, and maintain documentation in the Lead Team and Teams Education Equity channels. Support the Director and other team members in any additional duties required to sustain program operations. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and acceptance into a graduate program at American University. Current graduate student status at American University. Strong passion for education equity, community building, and leadership development. Experience with event planning, program administration, and student mentoring or community‑based learning. Proficiency with administrative tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Teams, scheduling systems) and a proactive mindset. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Experience working with diverse constituencies and familiarity with digital platforms. Preferred: background in youth development, leadership development, or equity‑centered education. Employment Information Part‑time: 20 hours per week. Salary: $18.00 – $18.50 per hour. Primary in‑office work modality with some hybrid flexibility; occasional evening or weekend support may be required. This position is available only to enrolled American University students.
