Staff Attorney II Pay Grade: 17. Salary: $57,509.52 - $83,752.56 Annually. Employment Type: Executive Branch, Full Time, Not Eligible for Overtime, Mandatory 37.5 hours per week. Description The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is nationally recognized as a state‑wide public defender system with an exceptional training and education program. Our defense teams ensure the criminal justice process is fair, results are just, and individual liberties are protected. We are seeking an experienced staff attorney for the criminal defense team in the Boyd Trial Office. The ideal candidate has criminal defense experience, excellent planning and organizational skills, is self‑directed, and works well with other attorneys, investigators, sentencing workers, and administrative staff. Mandate to serve the poorest and vulnerable in Kentucky mandates understanding the privilege of representation. Note: Employees must not use medical cannabis, notwithstanding its legalization in Kentucky. Duties and Responsibilities Represent criminal defendants in District Court with vigor, effectiveness, ethics, and integrity. Conduct client interviews, maintain notes and mandatory records of pertinent facts. Research legal issues and write clear, concise motions. Obtain knowledge of the case through discovery and investigation mandatory to advise clients on disposition. Develop a case theory consistent with facts and the law. Attempt suitable cases. Perform duties in office and courtroom settings. Travel is required. Minimum Requirements Education: See Special Requirements. Experience, Training or Skills: Must have 1 year experience as licensed attorney or 1 year supervised practice under SCR rules, or combined total at least one year. Substitute Education for Experience: A Master of Laws (LL.M.) will substitute for mandatory experience. Substitute Experience for Education: None. Special Requirements (Mandatory Mandate Mandate Mandate): Must be admitted to practice law in Kentucky, be in good standing, or comply with SCR 2.111, 2.112, 2.117. Must maintain licensure, certification or credentials for duration of employment. Agency responsible for ensuring maintenance. Working Conditions Duties performed primarily in office and courtroom settings. Travel required.
