RECREATION ASSISTANT (WATER SAFTEY/SWIM INSTRUCTOR)

Summary This position is located at the Pool, Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB), Guam. The mission of Joint Region Marianas (JRM) Quality of Life (QOL) Programs (J9) is to provide the highest quality programs and services to the military community through self-sustainment across all QOL programs. Duties The primary function of this position is to instruct swimming and water safety classes at the Aquatics facility for patrons of all ages. Instructs various levels of swimming including front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, and others. Teaches students from infant through adult. Instructs basic diving, safety and survival skills. Works with lifeguards to ensure safe lessons, enforces pool safety standards, and follows facility operational rules. Plans and organizes instruction methods and goals in line with the Aquatics Program Manager and certifying organization. Directs student activities to provide high quality instruction. Develops swim program according to student's ability and promotes students to higher levels as appropriate. Provides individual feedback to parents/guardians, introductory equipment orientations, and conducts equipment inspections. Administers aquatic assessment testing and certification per DoD, DON and CNIC policy. Records lessons and submits documentation. Works with the Aquatics Program Manager on ongoing improvements. Prepares and completes accident/incident reports during emergencies and notifies management. Works with hazardous materials such as cleaning agents and pool chemicals. Checks identification cards to ensure proper patron usage. Assists in development of special programs, activities or instruction. Cleans and tidies equipment to maintain a safe environment. Provides telephone information regarding hours, events, and programs. Completes Daily Activity Reports, handles cash where applicable, verifies amounts, and secures cashier bag. A complete list of duties and responsibilities will be provided at the time of hire. Requirements Must possess/maintain Water Safety Instructor; Lifeguard Training; CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Providers; First Aid including Automated External Defibrillator Certification; and Blood Borne Pathogens certifications. Ability to satisfactorily complete background investigation (NACI) upon hiring and renew every 5 years or a Child Care National Agency Check with Inquiries when there is regular contact with children under 18. Must be able to work varied work schedules to include holidays, weekends, and evenings. Must be able to work with hazardous materials such as cleaning agents and pool chemicals. Qualifications In order to qualify for this position, resumes must include information demonstrating experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) related to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific about their experience and KSAs. If relying on education to meet qualification requirements, education must be accredited by an institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Provide only attendance and/or degrees from accredited schools and provide proof of education (official transcripts/high school diploma), personnel action or SFS0, credentials, statement of service, certification, training, and/or module completion at resume submission. Failure to provide required information may result in ineligibility. Knowledge of the organization's instructional methods and goals; DoD, DON, and CNIC aquatic assessment and testing policy; basic water safety equipment; basic first aid procedures including AED and blood borne pathogens; basic arithmetic for charge calculations; cash handling procedures. Ability to complete a 300 yard swim in less than 10 minutes; assess and provide instruction on swimming skills, basic diving, and water safety skills for all age groups; plan and organize age-based instruction; rescue persons in water; enforce safety regulations; communicate effectively orally and in writing. Work may involve extended hours of sitting, standing, and pool activities; frequent lifting or pulling of equipment; ability to lift 50 lbs. No positive education requirements. Additional Information Some positions have special requirements; selection is tentative pending satisfactory completion of these requirements. All selections are contingent upon satisfactory background and employment reference checks. Males must be registered for or exempt from Selective Service.
