2026-27 Assistant Coach – Boys Cross Country – Middle School Job ID: 12963 Position Information Position Type: Athletics/Activities/Assistant Coach Date Posted: 7/8/2026 Date Available: Fall 2026 Closing Date: First Screening 7/17/2026 Hours per Day: 2 hrs per day, Athletic Stipend Range: $3,313–$3,995 DOE (Based on 25-26 FWEA Coach Salary Schedule) Days of the Week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Shift Times: 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm Location: Illahee Middle School Days per Year: 45 Position Summary High school assistant coaches work in concert with the assistant coach to ensure the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching position and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Professional Development and Leadership. The assistant coach will keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with his/her sport by staying current with sport‑specific literature and attending clinics and workshops. Responsibility for Rules and Regulations. The assistant coach will study the rules and regulations associated with his/her sport, including WIAA, Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes. Program Promotion. The assistant coach will promote his/her sport within the school and in the community. Scores and contest‑related information will be reported to designated media and the league website immediately following each contest. Program Organization. The assistant coach is expected to attend practices and contests on a daily basis. An absence from practice should be rare and cleared in advance with the building athletic director. The assistant coach will implement a system of play or style of instruction as directed by the head coach. Standard of Care. The assistant coach is expected to model safety training relative to his/her sport as directed by the head coach and to have a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills and procedures, including basic taping and first‑aid functions. Professionalism. The assistant coach is expected to exercise good judgment and project positive coaching behaviors. The assistant coach should be calm, even‑keel, and fair‑minded, teaching and developing basic skills fundamentals, leadership characteristics, and cooperative, team‑oriented behavior. Sportsmanship and Ethics. The assistant coach is expected to serve as an example of sportsmanship and humility at all times, handling obstacles or losses with grace, dignity, and pride and insisting upon ethical behavior and good citizenship. Administrative Supervision. The assistant coach is responsible for participants from the time they report until they leave. Presentation of Rules/Regulations. The assistant coach thoroughly understands and reinforces eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code as directed by the head coach. Attention to Eligibility Rules. The assistant coach ensures that team members complete the eligibility process before allowing participation in practice activities. Accident/Injury Procedure. The assistant coach must call 911 for serious injuries, fill out and submit an Accident Report Form to the building athletic director within 24 hours, and report emergency situations immediately. Media Contact. The assistant coach reports scores promptly and accurately to local news media and the league website as directed. Meeting Attendance. The assistant coach attends building, district, league, and rules clinic meetings as scheduled and as required by Federal Way Public Schools. Post‑Season Awards Gathering. The assistant coach works with the head coach to plan and implement a post‑season gathering that includes participants from all program levels and parents/guardians. Responsibility for Playing Facility and Equipment. The assistant coach reports safety concerns to the head coach and assumes responsibility for care of program equipment and facilities. Violations and Ejections Procedure. The assistant coach reports violations or ejections immediately following contests. Coach Evaluation Process. The assistant coach attends an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director following the season. Assistant Coach as Program Leader. The assistant coach meets regularly with the head coach to discuss program goals and ensure consistent presentation and implementation of skills, systems, and strategies at all levels. Financial and Equipment Responsibility for Program Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory. The assistant coach is responsible for program equipment and supplies, accounting for all items checked out at the start of the season. Program Purchases. The assistant coach requests essential program needs through the head coach and does not purchase items with personal funds. Fundraising Activities. The assistant coach works through the head coach to discuss potential fundraising activities and does not raise or handle funds without approval from the building athletic director. Other Responsibilities Performs other related duties as assigned to support the efficient functioning of the work unit and student learning objectives. Required Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Prior sport‑specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post‑secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience. Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills. Additional Requirements Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis Preferred Qualifications Two or more years of paid high school and/or post‑secondary sport‑specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience. Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course, including passing the test. Condition of Employment 19 years of age or older, per WIAA regulations Criminal background clearance First Aid and CPR certification (hands‑on training required) Online Concussion Training (CT). A free course is available at (application may be submitted prior to completing training) Knowledge Of League and WIAA rules and regulations National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) sport‑specific rules and regulations Record keeping and report preparation School board policies and procedures Ability To Organize, administrate, and oversee a sport‑specific athletics program at each level of the program Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures Perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision; pay strict attention to detail Speak, read, and follow written or verbal communications Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines Develop and maintain positive customer relations with staff and service providers Work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co‑workers Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including confidentiality requirements Relate effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community Perform job responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Related to Cultural Competence and Equity Knowledge and awareness of own cultural identity and how it influences behavior, and desire to learn about others' identities. Physical Demands The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands for tasks, reach, talk, hear, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The employee regularly works in indoor conditions on surfaces of varying height and stability. Noise level is usually moderate to loud. Work Schedule Varies – work days are dependent on the schedule for the specific sport.
