Location: Chicago, Illinois Business Unit: Rush Medical Center Hospital: Rush University Medical Center Department: 8A-Antepartum-Postpartum Work Type: Part Time (Total FTE between 0.5 and 0.89) Shift: Shift 1 Work Schedule: 12 Hr (7:00:00 AM - 7:30:00 AM) Rush offers exceptional rewards and benefits learn more at our Rush benefits page ( Pay Range: $43.55 - $66.88 per hour Summary The RN Lactation Consultant is a registered nurse who provides specialized, holistic care to patients experiencing complex breastfeeding challenges that require high levels of care, including, but not limited to: high‑risk pregnant patients; infants with oral anatomy issues (ankyl­oglossia, cleft lip and/or palate) prematurity, failure to thrive, and hyperbilirubinemia; and patients with risk for insufficient or delayed milk supply, and/or complex medical histories. This role aligns with Rush’s mission, vision, and values, as well as the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) Standards of Practice. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Current RN license in Illinois. International Board‑Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. At least 2 years of clinical experience in maternal/child nursing. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in nursing or related field. More than 2 years of IBCLC experience (inpatient/outpatient). Familiarity with EPIC electronic health records. Clinical lactation support experience. Spanish‑speaking proficiency. Physical Demands Work in a fast‑paced environment with time constraints. Ability to stand or walk for most of the shift. Lift/carry objects weighing 35–40 lbs. Competencies Strong communication skills with diverse patient populations. Ability to work independently, manage assignments, and demonstrate attention to detail. Responsibilities Perform expert lactation assessments and skills by consistently identifying, assessing, and solving issues within scope of practice; demonstrates expert clinical judgment in complicated lactation/human milk scenarios. Develop and implement feeding plans (breastfeeding, pumping, supplementation). Perform initial and on‑going assessments of the parent/baby dyad’s lactation goals. Assist with evaluating procedures, developing, and implementing the safe handling of milk fed in the postpartum unit. Provide equitable care to diverse populations, including those with cultural, linguistic, or socioeconomic challenges. Communicate effectively with healthcare teams, patients, and families. Serve as a resource for healthcare staff across various departments. Deliver evidence‑based education to OB services staff. Revise policies to reflect current lactation research and evidence‑based practices. Plan and lead breastfeeding support groups for OB patients and members of the Rush community. Collect and manage data for Baby‑Friendly Hospital Initiative redesignation. Monitor and evaluate quality and safety issues related to lactation practices. Stay updated with lactation research and pursue continuing education. Actively engage in professional organizations, workshops, and seminars. Rush is an equal opportunity employer.
