Automation & Maintenance Specialist - PLC

Job Responsibilities The Automation & Maintenance Specialist – PLC is responsible for designing, programming, repairing, and maintaining manufacturing and packaging control systems and equipment used within Altium Packaging. The technician will inspect equipment for proper operation and perform preventative maintenance duties per manufacturer’s specifications. Tasks include troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and making repairs or adjustments as needed, designing, programming, repairing, and troubleshooting control systems, and performing preventative maintenance on PLC systems. The specialist must download and save programs for all PLC systems on every line to back them up, upgrade production lines with new equipment and technology, install and test new manufacturing, packaging, and processing equipment, and interface with machine tools, special equipment, or test modules. Responsibilities also cover troubleshooting existing equipment for electrical or electronic failures, modifying machines to improve or update them, working with IT and equipment manufacturers to troubleshoot and repair control systems, and inspecting, repairing, installing, modifying, and maintaining electrical/electronic systems, control circuits, and other production equipment. The role requires the development of user interfaces and ensuring systems meet safety and efficiency standards. Additional duties include troubleshooting and repairing pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical systems, blow molders, packaging equipment, resin transferring systems, and support equipment; making rapid, educated decisions regarding issues; ensuring safety of electrical networks and cables; and participating in troubleshooting activities, failure analysis, problem solving, and prevention. The specialist is also responsible for supporting repairs and installations for advanced production/manufacturing equipment, maintaining machines in optimal processing conditions, performing mold, pin, and other mechanical changes, executing preventative maintenance and repairs when required, and participating in continuous improvement while following safe workplace practices. The position requires mentorship and support to less experienced technicians, enforcement of GMP, safety, and audit standards, and ensuring compliance with corporate and plant safety standards and applicable laws and regulations. The role may require weekend and/or holiday work based on business needs; reasonable mandatory overtime may be required due to business needs. Key Qualifications Five (5) plus years of experience in industrial manufacturing controls & automation maintenance. Experience with PLCs/VFDs replacement and configuration. Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair skills. Experience with basic electrical systems (starters, fuses, contacts, relays). Experience with electronics (level probes, flow meters, drives/VFDs). Experience with product manuals and schematics (electrical blueprints with switches, starters, maps, relays). Experience with troubleshooting (diagnostics, problem solving). Position-Specific Skills Strong automation, electrical, and diagnostics skills with network and computer hardware fundamentals. Proficient in RS Logix 5000, RS Logix 500, RS Logix 5, or similar software for machine troubleshooting. Basic mathematical skills. Ability to download and/or modify PLC programs. Proficiency with a multimeter and work in control panels up to 480 VAC. Understanding of symbols on P&ID’s, tag references, and online layout drawings. Ability to replace Panelview series HMI’s and download applications using the proper programs and tools. Excellent communication skills. OSHA forklift certification. Aptitude for further development of technical skills. Physical Demands Must be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods. Use hands to handle, touch, and manipulate equipment and repairs. Ability to repeatedly stoop, reach, kneel, crouch, bend, climb, and/or twist as needed. Vision abilities include proximal vision, color vision, focus ability, and ability to effectively view computer-generated images. Occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds and pushing or pulling up to 25 pounds.
