Lab Assistant

Day Shift Clinical Lab Assistant (Onsite). 1.0 FTE, 8‑hour shift. Location: Stanford Health Care, Palo Alto, CA. What You Will Do Access patient information accurately into the laboratory computer system and verify all requests for proper and accurate patient information. Consult with a supervisor, lead or technologist when unclear or unusual requests are received; notify physicians, nursing units, clinics, etc. when a sample is inappropriate for testing or otherwise compromised. After processing, distribute samples appropriately, ensuring STAT requests are handled in a timely manner. Answer telephones, respond to inquiries regarding testing status, give out results, transfer calls as necessary, and respond to all inquiries in a polite and efficient manner. Assist with media preparation, reagent preparation, and glassware preparation when requested. Communicate with physicians, nurses, visitors and other laboratory/hospital staff cooperatively and courteously, responding to their needs with minimal waiting time. Follow all departmental policies regarding attendance, punctuality and health and safety. Independently resolve problems encountered in routine work and recognize when supervisor or technologist assistance is required. Keep all work areas clean and dispose of waste appropriately. Keep current with all laboratory procedures, techniques and changes in all areas of the laboratory through which you rotate. Maintain work areas well stocked with necessary supplies and notify appropriate personnel when inventory levels are low. Maintain all logs, records and data in a legible and precise manner. Print reports and fax; send via US mail or interdepartmental mail as requested. Provide backup coverage as necessary to monitor fax machines and scan reports for both Cerner and Epic reports according to written procedure; fax results upon request. Provide orientation and training to lab assistants, orienting new employees to general lab procedures and training them in the performance of non‑technical duties. Receive samples via the pneumatic system, couriers, patients or other hospital personnel, and deal with patient samples in an appropriate and efficient manner, routing them to the appropriate laboratory area or hospital department according to procedure. Report promptly to supervisor or lead any abnormal circumstances with equipment, machinery or other problems that may exist. Understand patient care and laboratory priorities and independently assist others to ensure efficient workflow. Education Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent Experience Qualifications None required Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical and non‑technical staff. Ability to organize, prioritize, multi‑task, and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to speak, read, write and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job. Knowledge of aseptic technique and other laboratory techniques (microbiology/virology). Knowledge of basic laboratory testing procedures, laboratory precautions and use and care of common laboratory equipment. Knowledge of instruments, methods and materials used in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of various non‑technical needs of a laboratory, usually acquired from a combination of previous work experience and/or schooling. Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $36.73 - $41.19 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
