Senior Accountant - P&C Controllership

Overview Senior Accountant role in Finance at Nationwide supports accounting for facultative & involuntary reinsurance, partnering with Reinsurance Placement, P&C Underwriting, and P&C Controllership. The position involves technical accounting execution and transformation‑mindded thinking, offering opportunities to deepen reinsurance accounting expertise and contribute to scalable solutions. This hybrid role is based in Columbus, Ohio, with onsite presence at least two days per week. Key Responsibilities Prepares and analyzes financial documents for the company and designated business areas. Reviews accuracy, proper documentation and completeness of reports, forms and data for internal and external reporting. Maintains accounting records for coordination, preparation, and submission of required reports. Develops and submits complex accounting and financial transactions to ensure proper reporting. Corresponds with field staff or outside sources regarding difficulties, discrepancies or other matters as directed. Keeps informed of changes to GAAP and/or STAT requirements. Participates in development of changes to area(s) of responsibility to enhance, improve, or facilitate job performance and workflow. Participates in the development and design of new systems and processes. Assists in preparing and analyzing complex pro forma financial information for compliance with new requirements, situations or reinsurance agreements. Completes assigned reports or projects accurately, with proper documentation. Prepares state and supplemental reporting as assigned and required. Assists in preparing complex financial information for external auditors, IRS, and state examiners; responds to questions as required. Prepares special reports and presentations as directed. Performs additional responsibilities as assigned. Reporting Relationships Reports to Accounting Supervisor or Manager. Typical Skills and Experience Education: Undergraduate studies in accounting or finance; accounting major and degree preferred. License/Certification: Progress toward CPA preferred. Experience: 2–4 years of related accounting experience; insurance experience preferred. Knowledge: GAAP and/or STAT knowledge; regulatory requirements for insurance or business areas. Financial statement preparation and analysis. Verbal and written communication skills for contact with all levels of management and external entities. Ability to analyze complex reporting requirements and financial data for compliance. Proficiency with personal computer and accounting, financial analysis, and business software. Leadership skills, competencies, and experiences may be considered. Job Conditions Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not eligible). Working Conditions: Normal office environment; may require extended hours during high volume periods.
