Position Overview

The Director of Field Operations oversees all field‐based demolition and excavating activities across Boutz Demolition’s, commercial, retail, and industrial projects. This role provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and safety management for multiple crews, foremen, and equipment operators. The Director ensures projects are executed safely, efficiently, profitably, and in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and Illinois regulatory requirements.

This position requires deep experience in demolition operations, excavating practices, heavy equipment utilization, and field leadership .

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Leadership & Strategy

• Direct all field operations for demolition and excavating projects.
• Develop and implement standardized workflows, production plans, and operational procedures.
• Oversee project scheduling, resource allocation, equipment planning, and daily execution.

2. Excavating Operations Oversight

• Lead and supervise, with assistance from project foreman, all excavating projects.
• Ensure proper use of excavators, skid steers, loaders, breakers, and related heavy equipment.
• Work with client management re: site conditions, safe procedures, and utility protection.
• Oversee equipment operator competency, equipment maintenance and safe practices.

3. Demolition Field Management

• Oversee selective interior, exterior, and site/civil demolition operations.
• Ensure engineering surveys, hazard assessments, and pre‐demo planning are completed and documented.
• Coordinate demolition sequencing, debris management, recycling, and environmental compliance.
• Support foremen and contractor superintendents in resolving technical challenges and site constraints.

4. Safety & Compliance Leadership

• Lead Boutz Demolition’s field safety program.
• Conduct site audits, safety inspections, and corrective action reviews.
• Oversee training programs for operators, laborers, foremen, and foreman/crew leaders.
• Investigate incidents, near misses, and implement root‐cause corrective actions.
• Ensure strict adherence to PPE, hazard communication, and equipment safety protocols.

5. Team Leadership & Development

• Supervise company foremen/crew chiefs, equipment operators, and field crews.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, competency evaluations, and performance management.
• Build a culture of accountability, professionalism, and safety‐first decision‐making.
• Mentor emerging leaders and support career development pathways.

6. Client, Contractor & Stakeholder Coordination

• Serve as the primary field operations contact for clients, GCs, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
• Attend pre‐construction meetings, progress meetings, and close‐out sessions.
• Provide technical expertise during bidding, planning, and change‐order discussions.

7. Financial & Resource Management

• Manage field budgets, labor utilization, equipment deployment, and production rates.
• Identify cost‐saving opportunities, efficiency improvements, and operational innovations.

Qualifications

Required

• 6+ years of demolition and/or excavating experience.
• 5+ years in a senior field leadership role (Operations Manager, Director).
• Strong knowledge of heavy equipment operation, methods, and demolition practices.
• Proven ability to lead multiple crews across multiple job sites.
• Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, Illinois excavation requirements, and industry best practices.
• Ability to read plans, specs, engineering reports, and utility maps.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem‐solving skills.

• OSHA 30, OSHA 500/510
• HAZWOPER 40
• Illinois Excavation Safety Certification
• Asbestos/lead supervisor certifications
• Experience with GPS‐guided equipment or modern excavation technologies
• NDA (National Demolition Association) certifications
