Community and Alumni Counselor

Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys

Job Description

Job Description

Why Statesmen Exists

With an ecosystem full of innovative options, Washington DC has become a laboratory for the newest iteration of education equity and reform. Still, 20 years in full swing with untold billions in full investment, the group needing the most out of that movement is now even further behind. The achievement gap for Black and Brown males continues to be largely unresponsive to many well-intended and well-designed innovations. At Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys PCS, we believe that this can and must change. Statesmen is founded on the core belief that high levels of achievement for male scholars experiencing urban poverty is not just possible — it is what we are here for.

But Statesmen has never believed that school alone is enough. The vision has always been bigger — young men who graduate from this building and go on to redesign the communities they come from. That vision requires a living connection between who our boys are now and who they are becoming. The Community & Alumni Coordinator is the person who keeps that connection alive — building the network of relationships that stretches from our current scholars through our graduates and into the broader community that surrounds and sustains this school.

What Statesmen Does

The recipe engaged to accomplish this task may seem complex but has two primary ingredients — high expectations combined with warm, caring, and trusting relationships. Given a tight-knit crew and a worthy cause, our boys are unstoppable. The vision of Statesmen is that the young male scholars who attend the academy one day lead in communities that they redesign. Always working in pursuit of the values of Relationships, Rigor, Relevance, and Resilience, the mission is to create a boy-friendly, pedagogy-informed academic environment within which young male scholars are equipped with the academic skills, social competencies, and personal development necessary to navigate life challenges, attend and complete the college of their choice, and return to become the premier agents of social change within and for the communities they serve.

Our boys do not graduate and disappear. They are Statesmen for life. And the community that holds them — families, neighbors, mentors, alumni, partners — is as much a part of this school as any classroom. This role exists to honor that truth and build on it.

What Makes This Work

Passionate, committed, resilient, focused, self-aware, mature, mission-aligned adults who embody personal and professional efficacy are necessary to carry this work forward. Statesmen is not a place to work. More than that, it is a place to live out a mission, a calling, a design for impact, and a desire for legacy. Consider these internal drivers:

  • You Do People! You are energized by relationships — with alumni who graduated years ago, with families who just enrolled, with community partners who want to invest in our boys. You remember names. You follow up. You make people feel like they matter to this school because they do.
  • You Do Results! You are not just a connector — you are a builder. You track alumni outcomes, cultivate partnerships with intention, and measure the health of the community you are building. You know the difference between activity and impact.
  • You Do Focus! You carry the Statesmen story with you into every partnership conversation, every alumni event, every community collaboration — and you tell it with pride, accuracy, and conviction.
  • You Do Not Quit! Alumni are hard to track. Community partners get busy. Events take more than anyone planned. You show up anyway, because you know that every connection you maintain is another thread in the safety net that holds our boys up long after they leave this building.

If that sounds like you, welcome to Statesmen. Welcome home.

Who We Need Now

Statesmen is seeking a Community & Alumni Coordinator who will build and sustain the relationships that extend the school's mission beyond promotion day. This role owns our alumni engagement strategy, manages our community partnership portfolio, and serves as a bridge between current scholars, Statesmen graduates, families, and the broader Ward 7 and Ward 8 communities we call home.

This is a relationship-first, mission-driven role for someone who thrives on connection, is energized by community, and understands that the long-term success of Black and Brown boys requires a network — not just a school. The Community & Alumni Coordinator reports to the Chief of Staff and works in close collaboration with the Head of School, development staff, and instructional leaders to ensure that the Statesmen brotherhood remains alive and growing long after scholars walk across the stage.

What You Will Do

Alumni Relations & Engagement

  • Build, maintain, and grow a comprehensive alumni database — tracking contact information, high school and college placement, career pathways, and life milestones for all Statesmen graduates.
  • Design and implement an annual alumni engagement calendar including reunions, mentorship opportunities, scholar panels, career days, and milestone celebrations.
  • Conduct regular outreach to alumni — by phone, email, social media, and in-person visits — to sustain connection, gather outcome data, and surface opportunities for alumni to re-engage with the school.
  • Develop and manage an alumni mentorship program that connects current scholars with Statesmen graduates navigating high school, college, and early career.
  • Celebrate and amplify alumni success stories through school communications, social media, and community events — reinforcing the vision of Statesmen graduates as leaders who redesign their communities.
  • Track and report alumni outcome data — high school persistence, college enrollment, graduation rates, career trajectories — to school leadership and funders as part of the school's long-term impact story.

Community Partnership Development

  • Identify, cultivate, and manage relationships with community organizations, businesses, faith institutions, and civic leaders in Wards 7, 8, and greater DC who can provide resources, opportunities, and support for scholars and families.
  • Coordinate community partnerships that bring enrichment, mentorship, internship, and career exposure opportunities directly to current scholars.
  • Serve as the school's liaison to neighborhood associations, advisory neighborhood commissions (ANCs), and community stakeholders — ensuring Statesmen is a visible, trusted, and contributing member of its community.
  • Manage a partnership portfolio with clear goals, timelines, and mutual accountability — tracking deliverables and reporting on partnership outcomes to school leadership.
  • Support grant development efforts by identifying community partners whose work aligns with funding priorities and connecting them to development staff.

Family & School Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager for Enrollment & Families to support family engagement initiatives, ensuring families feel connected not just to the school but to the broader Statesmen community.
  • Plan and execute school-wide community events — including alumni panels, family celebrations, community service days, and brotherhood-building experiences — that deepen belonging for scholars, families, graduates, and partners alike.
  • Support the development and distribution of school communications — newsletters, social media content, impact reports — that keep the extended Statesmen community informed and engaged.
  • Maintain and grow Statesmen's social media presence as a tool for community-building, alumni connection, and school storytelling, in coordination with school leadership.

Scholar-Facing Programming

  • Connect current scholars with alumni, mentors, and community partners through structured in-school programming — career exploration sessions, guest speaker series, college access workshops, and service-learning opportunities.
  • Support the development of scholars' sense of identity, purpose, and long-term vision by ensuring they see — in the faces and stories of alumni — what is possible for men who look like them.
  • Collaborate with advisory and Kings 101 teams to integrate community and alumni connections into the school's identity and leadership development programming.

Who Must You Be

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Education, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in community engagement, alumni relations, partnership development, or a comparable relationship-management role.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills — warm, credible, and effective across audiences ranging from middle schoolers to community leaders to corporate partners.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple relationships, events, and projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in database management, CRM tools, or equivalent contact and relationship tracking systems.
  • Comfort with social media platforms as tools for community engagement and storytelling.
  • Deep commitment to the mission of Statesmen and to the long-term success of Black and Brown boys in Washington, D.C.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a K–12 school, higher education, or youth-serving nonprofit setting.
  • Personal connection to Ward 7, Ward 8, or communities similar to those Statesmen serves — lived experience is an asset.
  • Experience managing mentorship programs, alumni networks, or volunteer coordination.
  • Familiarity with DC's civic and community landscape — ANCs, CBOs, faith institutions, and Ward-level stakeholders.
  • Experience with event planning and community event logistics.
  • Status as a Statesmen alumnus or family member is a plus, though not required.

What Will You Get

A home. A family. A place to carry out your personal mission. You will get challenged and you will grow. You will get to rest your head each night knowing that what you did today — mattered.

You will also receive a competitive salary commensurate with credentials and experience, with Statesmen's full benefits package. You will get to build something that does not yet fully exist — an alumni network and community partnership infrastructure that will outlast any single school year and extend the reach of this mission into the lives of young men long after they graduate. You will be trusted, resourced, and supported to do that work with creativity and conviction.

What You Must Do Now

We are deeply committed to equity and diversity and will not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, or any other personal or professional status. If Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys PCS sounds like your next home, please reach out to express your interest. We want to know that you are out there.
