Job Description:\n\nElectrical Arc-Flash Field Survey & Testing Technician Position Summary REV1 Energy Electrical Services is seeking an experienced Electrical Arc-Flash Field Survey & Testing Technician to perform field data collection, electrical equipment surveys, and testing activities supporting arc-flash studies, short-circuit studies, protective device coordination studies, electrical maintenance programs, and commissioning projects. The technician will work in industrial, commercial, utility, power-generation, Oil and Gas refinery and other electrical facilities to accurately identify and document for electrical equipment, collect nameplate and system data information, verify protective-device settings , perform electrical testing as assigned, and support engineering personnel in the development of accurate arc-flash models in SKM or ETAP. This position requires strong electrical field hand on experience, attention to detail, safe work practices, and the ability to work independently in energized and de-energized electrical equipment such as Low and High Voltage Switchgear, Load Break Switches, Motor Control Centers and Distribution panels. Essential Responsibilities Arc-Flash Survey & Data Collection · Perform field surveys of electrical distribution and power-generation systems. · Identify and document electrical equipment ratings and settings, including: o Utility information such as fault contribution (Phase to Phase (Bolted fault) and Single Line to Ground Fault) with respective X/R ratio if available. o Switchgear o Switchboards o Motor control centers (MCCs) o Panelboards o Transformers o Circuit breakers o Fuses o Disconnects Switches o Motor starters o Generators o UPS systems o Variable-frequency drives (VFD) o Identify system grounding for all level of voltages o Bus duct and other distribution equipment. o Solid State Protective Relays (Make & Model) · Collect Protective Relay, Breaker or Equipment settings, nameplate information, , manufacturer, model, serial number, interrupting ratings, trip-unit information (50/51) or LSIG, and other required data. · Document conductor sizes, insulation types, lengths, raceway configurations, transformer name plate information such as Windings information for both Primary and secondary sides whether Delta or Wye configurations, impedances, grounding arrangements whether solidly ground versus Hogh or Low Resistance Grounding, and other system parameters. · Verify one-line diagrams against actual field conditions. · Develop one-line diagrams based upon field survey data if existing one-line diagram is not available. · Identify discrepancies between drawings, equipment, and existing electrical installations. · Photograph and electronically document equipment and nameplates as required. · Accurately enter field data into company databases, spreadsheets, or engineering software such as ETAP or SKM Protective Device Data · Identify and document circuit breaker and protective relay information. · Record breaker frame size, trip rating, sensor rating, instantaneous settings, short-time settings, Long Time Delay, long-time settings, Short Time Delay, ground-fault settings, and available electronic trip-unit information. · Document fuse manufacturer, type, class, ampere rating, and interrupting rating. · Record protective relay manufacturer, model, settings such as instantaneous, short-time, Long Time, Time Delay associated with trip settings. Ground-fault settings, and applicable CT/PT information. · Identify low voltage breakers with adjustable versus fixed protective-device settings. · Assist engineers with verification of protective-device settings. · Capable of Understanding TCC curves Electrical Testing Support Perform or assist with electrical testing activities as qualified, including: · Circuit breaker testing. · Insulation resistance testing. · Continuity testing. · Transformer testing. · Grounding-system testing. · Protective relay testing. · Current transformer testing. · Potential transformer testing. · Cable testing. · Battery and DC system testing. · Electrical equipment visual/mechanical inspection. · Functional testing of protective devices. Testing shall be performed in accordance with applicable company procedures, project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and recognized industry standards. Engineering Support · Provide accurate field data to electrical engineers performing: o Arc-flash hazard analysis. o Short-circuit analysis. o Protective-device coordination studies. o Load-flow studies. o Electrical system modeling. · Assist engineers in resolving discrepancies identified during field surveys. · Perform field verification of engineering models when requested. · Support development and installation of arc-flash labels. · Assist with field verification of completed arc-flash studies. Safety · Follow all company safety policies and project-specific safety requirements. · Comply with applicable requirements of NFPA 70E, OSHA, and site electrical safety programs. · Properly establish shock and arc-flash boundaries. · Select and use appropriate PPE and voltage-rated equipment. · Follow lockout/tagout procedures. · Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), pre-job briefings, and toolbox meetings. · Never compromise electrical safety to obtain field data. · Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or discrepancies that could create a personnel or equipment hazard. Required Qualifications · High school diploma or equivalent. · Minimum 3–5 years of electrical field experience; electrical testing, commissioning, maintenance, or industrial electrical experience preferred. · Strong knowledge of low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems. · Ability to read electrical one-line diagrams and wiring diagrams. · Ability to identify electrical equipment and protective devices in the field. · Familiarity with circuit breakers, switchgear, MCCs, transformers, relays, fuses, and electrical distribution equipment. · Ability to accurately collect and document technical field data. · Ability to use digital cameras, tablets, computers, and field data-collection software. · Ability to work safely around energized electrical equipment. · Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer facilities. Preferred Qualifications · Electrical testing or commissioning experience. · NETA Technician certification or equivalent electrical testing experience. · NFPA 70E training. · OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training. · Experience with arc-flash field surveys. · Experience with SKM Power*Tools, ETAP, EasyPower, or similar electrical engineering software. · Experience with protective relays and electronic trip units. · Experience with medium-voltage switchgear. · Experience in power generation, industrial, utility, oil & gas, manufacturing, or other heavy industrial environments. · Experience interpreting electrical construction drawings and single-line diagrams. · Experience performing NETA acceptance or maintenance testing. Technical Skills The successful candidate should be able to: · Read and interpret electrical one-line diagrams. · Identify electrical equipment and components. · Understand basic electrical distribution-system configurations. · Understand transformer connections and impedance information. · Understand circuit-breaker ratings and trip characteristics. · Identify protective-device settings. · Understand CT and PT applications. · Perform electrical measurements using appropriate test equipment. · Operate electrical test instruments safely. · Accurately record field measurements and equipment information. · Recognize discrepancies between drawings and installed equipment. · Communicate technical information clearly to engineers, project managers, and customers. Physical Requirements · Ability to work in electrical rooms, substations, power plants, industrial facilities, and construction environments. · Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. · Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work in elevated or confined areas when required. · Ability to lift and carry tools and test equipment. · Ability to wear required PPE for extended periods. · Ability to work outdoors and in varying environmental conditions. · Ability to travel to customer sites, including overnight travel when required. Work Environment The position may involve work in: · Electrical substations. · Power-generation facilities. · Industrial plants. · Manufacturing facilities. · Oil & gas facilities. · Commercial buildings. · Data centers. · Utility facilities. · Construction sites. Travel may be required depending on project assignments. Performance Expectations The Arc-Flash Field Survey & Testing Technician is expected to demonstrate: · Safety first – no compromise of electrical safety. · Accuracy – field data must be complete and technically correct. · Attention to detail – small errors can significantly affect an arc-flash study. · Professionalism – positive interaction with customers and site personnel. · Reliability – arrive prepared and complete assigned field work on schedule. · Technical competence – understand the equipment being surveyed and tested. · Communication – promptly identify and communicate field discrepancies. · Documentation discipline – maintain complete and organized field records. Key Performance Indicators · Accuracy and completeness of field-survey data. · Percentage of survey data accepted without engineering rework. · Compliance with project schedules. · Safety performance. · Quality and completeness of photographs and documentation. · Proper identification of protective-device settings. · Accurate reconciliation of field conditions against one-line diagrams. · Customer satisfaction. · Compliance with company testing and documentation procedures.
