Distance Learning Instructional Assistant/Bus Driver This position supports the delivery of instruction at a distance learning facility and includes school bus transportation responsibilities within the Chatham County Public Schools system in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Responsibilities Monitors work assigned by instructor. Monitors student behavior. Monitors equipment operation. Reports technical difficulties. Records courses for replay. Distributes and collects instructional materials. Monitors and facilitates instruction. Maintains records such as registration, attendance, facility scheduling, and evaluations. Operates the assigned school bus on the route(s) and schedule. Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the bus. Performs required post‑trip inspections to detect passengers, damage, vandalism, and other irregularities. Observes all safety regulations and standards for school buses, including cleaning the bus and evacuating students in emergencies. Maintains discipline of students on the bus, establishing a consistent discipline plan. Secures the bus after each run, ensuring proper parking, visual inspection, and securing windows and doors. Maintains acceptable relationships with parents/guardians and school personnel. Performs other duties as assigned by the school principal. Qualifications Requires a high school diploma and either 48 semester hours, an associate’s degree, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience driving large vehicles and transporting students is preferred. A valid driver’s license suitable for school bus operation is required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to operate equipment. Ability to record data accurately. Ability to effectively manage and monitor students. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Physical requirements include the use of various equipment and tools, lifting and carrying objects with minimal force, standing and walking for extended periods, and performing tasks consistent with light work. The applicant must be able to speak, read, and interpret written instructions, and handle stressful and varied situations. Terms of Employment Full‑time for ten months.
