Project Geologist
We are seeking an experienced Project Geologist to lead and support environmental investigation and remediation projects, with a primary focus on underground storage tank (UST) and Ohio BUSTR corrective-action work. This role requires deep expertise in the BUSTR corrective-action process and the ability to independently manage projects through investigation, risk evaluation, groundwater monitoring, and remediation. The position emphasizes Tier 2 evaluations, risk-based corrective action, BUSTR-Screen modeling, and remedial planning, while also overseeing UST closure assessments and Tier 1 investigations. You will combine strong technical geology and environmental skills with project management, technical reporting, regulatory coordination, and clear client communication.
Responsibilities
- Plan, perform, and oversee UST closure assessments in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Conduct and manage site check investigations to identify and evaluate potential petroleum releases.
- Perform Tier 1 source investigations and Tier 1 investigations to delineate contamination and assess risk.
- Develop scopes of work and sampling programs for soil and groundwater investigations.
- Evaluate the nature and extent of petroleum impacts to soil and groundwater using field and analytical data.
- Interpret laboratory, geological, hydrogeological, and groundwater-monitoring data to support project decisions.
- Coordinate drilling, monitoring-well installation, sampling, and other field activities with subcontractors and internal teams.
- Prepare clear and comprehensive technical reports and regulatory submittals in accordance with Ohio BUSTR requirements.
- Interpret soil, groundwater, geological, and analytical data to support Tier 2 evaluations.
- Identify and evaluate potential human-health exposure pathways and receptors at impacted sites.
- Develop Site-Specific Target Levels (SSTLs) using BUSTR Tier 2 spreadsheets and other applicable tools.
- Develop and evaluate site-specific corrective-action strategies that support risk-based regulatory closure.
- Utilize BUSTR-Screen models to evaluate petroleum impacts and support risk-based corrective-action decisions.
- Develop BUSTR-Screen model calibration plans and evaluate model results against site conditions and monitoring data.
- Develop and oversee groundwater monitoring plans to assess flow, contaminant migration, plume behavior, and concentration trends.
- Evaluate groundwater flow patterns, contaminant migration pathways, plume behavior, and concentration trends to guide corrective actions.
- Use technical findings to recommend appropriate paths toward regulatory closure and long-term site management.
- Evaluate remedial alternatives for petroleum-impacted soil and groundwater, considering effectiveness and feasibility.
- Design and develop pilot studies to evaluate potential remedial technologies for site-specific conditions.
- Coordinate and oversee pilot study implementation and related field activities to ensure data quality and safety.
- Interpret pilot study results and make recommendations regarding full-scale remediation approaches.
- Prepare detailed Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) that outline remedial objectives, technologies, and implementation strategies.
- Provide technical oversight during remediation activities and evaluate system performance data to optimize effectiveness.
- Coordinate with clients, subcontractors, laboratories, regulators, and internal project teams throughout corrective-action projects.
- Independently manage multiple environmental projects from initial investigation through regulatory resolution.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and technical approaches that align with client objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and review proposals, technical reports, work plans, and regulatory submissions for accuracy and completeness.
- Serve as a technical resource and mentor for junior environmental scientists, geologists, and field staff.
- Communicate investigation results, risks, recommendations, and project status clearly and professionally to clients.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies regarding project requirements, technical findings, and corrective-action strategies.
- Manage subcontractors including drilling, excavation, laboratory, and remediation contractors to ensure quality and adherence to project plans.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible environmental consulting experience, ideally involving petroleum-contaminated sites.
- Several years of direct experience with UST investigation and corrective-action projects.
- Strong working knowledge of the Ohio BUSTR corrective-action process, including investigation, risk evaluation, and remediation.
- Demonstrated experience with BUSTR Tier 2 evaluations, including data interpretation, exposure pathway evaluation, and development of Site-Specific Target Levels (SSTLs).
- Working knowledge of BUSTR-Screen model calibration plans and the ability to interpret model outputs.
- Hands-on experience with UST closure assessments, Tier 1 source investigations, contamination delineation, and technical/regulatory report preparation.
- Proven ability to interpret soil, groundwater, analytical, and hydrogeological data to support environmental decision-making.
- Strong technical writing skills with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports and regulatory submittals.
- Effective project-management skills, including planning, organizing, and managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong client-communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts, risks, and recommendations in an understandable manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience managing project budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and client relationships.
- Experience in environmental consulting involving petroleum-contaminated sites and corrective-action programs.
- Familiarity with UST, underground storage tank systems, and associated regulatory frameworks.
- Experience developing remedial action plans (RAPs) and implementing remediation strategies for impacted soil and groundwater.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a small, specialized UST group and to serve as a mentor to junior staff.
- Interest in career growth opportunities within a growing environmental consulting group.
- Ability to contribute to a large and diverse project portfolio with a substantial backlog of active projects.
- Motivation to participate in a performance-oriented culture that offers profit sharing and holiday bonuses.
